I forgot all about the MET in HD showing this morning! Partly because
I hadn't seen any reviews until today!
Here's a bit from a brief NYT review:
The Met’s production is glossy, sweet and rich in
laughs. And it has stars:
Lawrence Brownlee makes a dashing
Almaviva, singing with a focused, ardent tenor.
Isabel Leonard is a pitch-perfect Rosina,
cute but sharp clawed, dispatching Rossini’s dizzying runs and ornaments with
stenciled precision. Maurizio Muraro owns the role of Bartolo, his diction
flawless in the rapid-fire patter arias. Paata Burchuladze was a sly, gravelly
Basilio.
Mr. Mariotti led an attentive, febrile performance
from the orchestra that showed meticulous attention to small details: a touch
greater prominence given to a sinewy viola line here, an eerily electric cello
rumble suggesting the storm in Act II.
Not much to go on here, but if anyone wants to go Wednesday at 6:30
(running time, 3 1/2 hours), let me know.
Cheers,
Dick Gunther
