What are your most pressing questions regarding the application? What
part of the process is causing you the most anxiety? Anything specific?

So I see several responses are going to my email rather than the
message board...hmmmm. Ill see if I can fix it. Have to go to a
concert right now though! :)

Where is everyone at with your applications?? You should have at least
one or two good case reports now...:)

applications going very slowly Jon, only been able to add one or two
patients to log... and still no suitable casestudys.. I'll trying to
hack away at the study and am completing our local ECC Diploma in the
meantime.... maybe next year will be my year??

ah man Amy. I am sorry. If this was my year to apply I would be in
trouble as its been slow around here as well. Personally its been a
hard year so far for me...just because when I am not challenged I get
frustrated. I have a month to get my app into Murdoch...maybe I will
see ya around in a year or more! haha Still pretty undecided about
things though...

So far I have been able to scrounge 12 cases to put in my log. My 2
biggest concerns are that I will not have enough cases and that since
I only work Tues, Fri and every other weekend I am not able to do many
of the procedures on the interesting cases. How involved do I need to
be in order to log it? Not sure if taking care of an animal for 1 12
hour shift is enough to count it as a case log. I do not think I can
request anymore hours, and I have already indicated that if anything
comes in that I can do procedures on to call me (I live 4 minutes from
work!). Any recommendations would be appreciated!

I feel like I'm waiting for the good critical cases and I don't have many "stable" cases. What kind of cases are being looked for? Do they want some outpatient cases? Or should we be doing a few skills in every case?

You definitely can use a patient that you worked on during your shift
as a log and even as a report!! All of mine were these type of cases.
Are you going to have enough hours of experience working that many
shifts?

All kinds of emergency and/or critical care. Dystocia, HBC, Dog Fight
trauma, Eclampsia, IMHA and ITP, all of it. Dont make the mistake of
not having enough cases. Try to include your skills from the skill
list and make your case reports your best cases! Show off! :)
Personally I like to see that the person knows why something is done
and the pathophysiology behind it. Outpatient is probably not
sufficient...

I wouldn't worry so much that you only have a patient for one shift at
a time as much as the quality of the cases themselves. Try to write
down LOTS of cases, then weed them out later. It's better to have too
many and be able to weed out some of the less emergent/critical and
the repeats than it is to find yourself in November with only 40
cases. That was one of my mistakes in my first application (that was
rejected)....I scrambled at the end and only submitted 55 cases and
the case log was one of the reasons my application was rejected.

And this year I am taking the test and plenty of my case log patients
I only worked on during one shift. Most of the procedures are often
done right after admit anyways so a lot of the skills you are
demonstrating will be concentrated on one shift even if you worked
with them over a couple of days. And 2 of my case reports I only
worked with for one shift.....a horrible slug bait that was
anesthetized for like 8 hours amidst massive decontamination, and a
mesenteric torsion cat that was euthanized post-op after only being in
the hospital for about 8 hours. So length of time is not the deciding
factor for the making of a good case!

regarding the case reports, how much redundancy is advisable?  i mean, obviously, i am chosing cases that arent alike, but if i cover some information about hetastarch or something in one case, do i want to avoid that information in the next?

and i dont suppose anyone has a compiled list of volunteer mentors out there?  like people willing to review reports and case logs and give feed back... i feel kinda lonely on this.

thank you so much for putting this forum together.

also, do you know if there is a preferred format for citing references?
thanks!

Hi Haven,

If you're on Facebook, there is a group organized for applicants.  You can join here:

I highly recommend joining a study group.  There may be a somewhat official one starting in January - stay tuned!

As for the redundancy in your case reports: don't assume that the reviewers will read your cases in order, or that every reviewer will review every case.  Therefore, you would want to include any explanatory information in each case.

For reference citing, I used APA format.

I am happy to review your case reports/case logs.  I'm sure there are others out there available as well.  Good luck!

Haven,
I would be happy to review case logs/reports.
As far as redundancy, I treated all my case reports as individuals.  Just because you covered in-depth info on one doesn't mean you should assume the evaluator will consider your next report complete if it is not there.  Hope that helps.

thanks for your time, and the heads up regarding the study group!

wow.
i sooo did not mean to post my reports to the whole world.   now i feel ridiculously vunerable.  like naked in public.

on the other hand, if any body has constructive criticism i guess i may as well take it in....

Hey Jonathan,
did you apply last year? if so, did you get in to the exam and if so, how was your exam?!
Im currently busy putting the last few logs in the application form and putting the last hand on
my 4th case.  Im very curious to hear your experiences with the whole process.
We dont have anything to go on, because in our country (the netherlands) me and my
colleague are the only ones to participate as a first in the history of the dutch technicians.

the part that is causing my anxiety, is the constant nagging voice in my head that says im not
good enough to apply.

greetings nynke

If I remember correctly, Jonathan applied and passed his exam a couple of years ago ;)

I went through the process last year and I can tell you that I had the very same nagging voice in my head.  In fact, at the IVECCS I attended while I was gathering my cases I decided to not even apply at all!  I thought there was no way my application would even be accepted, much less that I would be able to pass the test.

So, you're not alone.  I'm pretty sure everyone is feeling the way you are now.

As for the exam: it was one of the hardest, most exhausting tests I've taken.  I was part of a study group last year that was INCREDIBLY helpful and I encourage you to join one if you can.

Congratulations on being a leader in veterinary technology in The Netherlands!!

Dear Liz,
thank you for your reply! I thought jonathan posted in  2011 so i thought he must have taken the exam this year :)

Its nice to hear i'm not alone! We started a study group at the beginning of this year, so we are studying, colecting caselogs and cases and working altogether.
A bit much but I hope it will all be so worth it!

Can you tell me a bit more about the test? How long is the test, does it contain only multiple choice questions, and how much time do you have to complete it? Is the test before or after the IVECCS congress?
And i was wondering, is it so that we need to know al the dosages of medication also? This is something I cant find in the study program or the application cd of  2012.
And when did you hear you were accepted to even take the exam? And after the exam, how long after did you hear  you passed it? As i may assume you passed it!

I know its a lot of questions but we have been in the dark till now about all these things and we want to prepare as good as possible.

Greetings a very nervous technician ;)

Good for you for working together on your applications!  It is really helpful to have your colleagues for support and study help!

You can visit avecct.org for information on the test.  It is 200 multiple choice questions and you have 3 hours to complete it.  I believe a new study guide is in the works.  It should be included with your acceptance letter.  The test is generally administered the day before IVECCS begins.

My study group did not focus on dosages because technicians (in the US) are not allowed to prescribe drugs.  Instead we focused on what the drugs are used for, their effects, and side-effects.

The application review process is lengthy to be sure that every application is given full consideration.  I heard from AVECCT in March that I was accepted to sit for the exam.  After the exam, the test is submitted for statistical analysis and scoring.  We received our results 60 days after the exam date.

I am hosting a rounds session on VSPN tonight at 9p ET (USA) with tips for writing case reports..  Not sure if you'll be able to make it, but the transcript will be available on the VSPN site in a few days.

Hope this information is helpful for everyone!  Good luck!

Hello Nynke,

I am sorry for the late reply. I passed my exam in 2010. I currently reside on the exam committee. I felt the exam was fair and tough and my goal with being on the committee was to make sure it stayed relevent and up to date. Its a little more digital now and probably easier. I will be proud to have a fellow member from the Netherlands!

Hi Jonathan,

thank you for your reply, Im very nervous for my results and hoping to be found good enough to participate the exam next september.

Glad to read that the results will be known mid march, which is soon! Currently im developing a three day course on ECC for fellow technicians in the Netherlands, so that takes my mind a bit off the anxiety around the application.

Fingers crossed!

Kind regards Nynke
