We all know it is overwhelming trying to decide what to study for the
exam. Maybe everyone can chime in here and give some fresh ideas to
for the rest of us.

Ken had a question regarding the suggested reading list. For me I
really like Dibarola's Fluid, Electrolyte and Acid/Base book,
Wingfields ICU book and definitely the yearly MDRs from IVECCs. I also
have enjoyed the JVECCS journal for many years.

I also like Battaglia's critical care book. And Small Animal
Emergency and Critical Care from Silverstein & Hopper.

How are most people studying? Just by reading, or with flash cards,
or in a study group?

I think everyone has a little different way of studying. I try to do
the whole flash card thing but I end up making them and never using
them. I tend to read for the most part. Study groups are nice. A few
techs I work with whom also tested last year studied in a group. Due
to how far I lived from them I couldn't join them but I know they
enjoyed it and it served them well.

I studied with David Liss over the internet. We sent emails with
questions from many different topics. We also exchanged phone numbers
so when we were away from the computer we could also text questions. I
have to say even when I was out having a beer after work...I would be
texting him questions regarding acid/base and he would in reply
question me! We did this up to the day prior to the exam.

Hey Jonathan,

Thank you for setting up this discussion group for us. Any sort of
extra guidance is greatly appreciated.

I have had several people recommend the Veterinary ICU Book by
WIngfield now, and I have been selectively reading chapters out of it
over time. I plan on reading the entire book. This is giving me enough
to do at the moment, that I haven't really had a chance to plan what I
would be reading next.

In terms of studying, I like to read on my own, but seem to need
repetition and I try to get that by 1) reading, 2) taking notes while
reading, and 3) setting it aside to type up the notes later.

Being "pop quizzed" sounds like a very cool way to test my
understanding and memory of these topics. I think it also would help
confirm whether my understanding of veterinary medicine is in tune
with the "outside world". I sometimes do feel our practice is so
varied in experience (between 25 doctors and 100 total staff) that any
one topic can generate such varied beliefs and opinions, I don't know
what to take as knowledge accepted as true (at least for the time
being).

Thanks again Jonathan. Looking forward to getting good info out of
this.

Ken

You are welcome Ken,

Remember what you read. I do understand that specialists have
different opinions...boy do I know! I think you have to stick with
what you read. I study a lot like you. When I take a class or go to a
lecture I like to take notes. I think it helps me remember. Others
tell me that they would rather listen then be writing...I guess
everyone does it a bit different. If you are an organized
person...some of us are, some of us are not ;), try breaking it down a
bit, section by section. Sounds like that is what you are doing.
Personally there are subjects that I enjoy and some I do not. I made
the mistake of not studying the subjects I dislike. Dont do the same!
This exam is hard if you are not prepared.

Studying has fallen by the wayside this week, but I am following a
plan as soon as I get back on the wagon. I have taken the time till
exam - 153 days for those who want to freak out with me.... and
divided it based on weight on the exam. It is not a perfect way of
studying because some subjects need more of my time, but it makes me
feel like I have touched on everything at least. Emergency veterinary
secrets has a million review questions so I am using that. I am also
almost done with Bataglia and I am knee deep in five minute consult.
I really love the critical care first look book for elytes and acid
base.

I would appreciate sharing some "pop quizes" as well.

Abbott CE also has great review series on fluid therapy, diabetes and
anesthesia with review questions. abbotthealth.com . These are free
to my knowledge.

That is a good one Kelly, Emergency Vet secrets, and that new five
minute ECC consult book is great! For those of you working on the
application...dont forget to check out AVECCTs new Veterinary
Emergency and Critical Care Nursing book debuting at IVECCs this year.
You may recognize some of the contributers names! ;)

Umm, yeah, not so much progress here but we lost 3 techs and I can't take the exam this year anyway.
I'm working on it!!!!

Studying (or where to begin) is completely overwhelming to me! I have
ordered several of the recommended books so when they arrive I am sure
to be reading them. I also like the idea of quizzes. Perhaps group
members can submit quizzes on material that they are studying? I
would be mutally beneficial, I know personally the more I work with a
subject (other than reading) the more understanding and retention I
have. Any thoughts on this??

I think that would be great. Maybe I will start something off...:)

I know this is hard for everyone. I guess we all have are own way to
study. Some people are very organized. One subject at a time spending
a few weeks on each maybe reading books or lecture material...others
are more haphazard. I think you should spend most of your time on your
most weak areas. Get as most experience as you can at work. Ask
questions at work regarding a disease process or treatment protocol
you don't understand.
