Who is interested in a hike through the mountain. The cave we go through is called Boomslang cave. The cave is in Kalk Bay. You will need some form of light making device (also known as a torch, please avoid fire). Oh, and the hike is best done in the dryer months, for those that do not know those months... essentially it is summer. There will be crawling involved and a possibility of getting dirty and wet. We are looking for Saturday the 16th. I will have to take someone along that has done this before (from either side). Here is more info...

"Tree Snake Cave"... but it should be fine... ;-)

Visitors to Boomslang Cave may glimpse a spider-like creature with long antennae. This  unusual and rare specimen is the tiny, long-legged, golden-haired, cave cricket  (Spelaeiacris tabulae). It’s found nowhere else in Africa but similar crickets are found in  the Falklands, New Zealand and Australia. Given that the cave cricket cannot tolerate  sunlight and lives only in caves, it could not have migrated to such distant shores.

Boomslang cave is a relatively easy, safe cave that offers a good introduction to caving. Although there are two entrances to the cave, the one that faces Fish Hoek valley is traditionally known as the entrance, and the one that faces Echo Valley is known as the exit.

There is no reserve, thus we need not wait for the gates to open. We were very lucky with the weather being so cool (overcast and windy) last time and this time it may be hot. I would want to hike from 7am - but at least this time, you lot are in Cape Town and we have to wake early and do the drive ;)

I have no idea how long the hike is but I am sure it wont be 7hrs again ;)

Just a quick survey of what people are wanting. There are two options:
  1. Hike from the top of the mountain, do the cave and return (estimated 1 hour)
  2. Hike from Boyes Drive, Kalk Bay, do cave, walk echo valley, return (estimated 3-4 hours)
I am looking forward to doing the 4 hour one. Walk up from Boyes drive and do a circular route. The weather will be hot and the wind less than our last hike on Saturday, http://www.windfinder.com/forecast/kalkbay

Please reply with your preference or message me personally, so that I can see what everyone else is up for. We will be starting early morning if we do the 4 hour and later in the day if we do option 1. Remember to get a torch / headlamp / fire / glow sticks (we could throw a party).

We could try to get this passed the park board and have a party in the Cave... sure the sound would be amazing and the flashy lights would really have a nice effect. :p

Hi All

So it is confirmed. We will be doing the hike this Saturday (16th). We will be doing a circular route starting and ending on Boyes Drive. The hike starts at 7am. Bring a flashlight with for the cave. There looks to be a alternative route for those that are claustrophobic and will be avoiding the cave. Please indicate if you are joining so that we know who to wait for on Saturday. The weather is good and will be hot in the afternoon for our descent. For those that want to afterwards, they can have a drink in Kalk Bay at any of the various locations. The hike is around 4 hours. So we shall be done around lunch time. We will be following the below route...

I will be confirming numbers on Thursday evening, so you have time to think about it.

Warm regards,

So for all those that were on the hike... here are the pics I have collected so far

-- on dropbox nogal

-- who took great pictures

-- the few that came out okay

Great stuff for all of those that took pictures. I love the use of different social networks for sharing, three albums... one dropbox, one windows live and one google+
Keep up the good work.

P.S. These are the only albums I have managed to get my hands on... any issues viewing, let me know and I will sort it out for you.
