Helderberg Dome, Hike

So I did the route to the West Peak by myself on the 24th of December... in reverse. It was rather dumb of me due to the decent required at the end. Refer to the map. I almost ended up doing the Dome by mistake as well. It was a very slow pace at just under 5 hours. I was listening to an audio book and taking long breaks to eat. I want to do the Dome next and quite a few people have expressed an interest. 

So...

How about the 19th(Sat) or 27th (Sun) of January. Alternatively the 3rd(Sun) of February. 

We start when the gates open at 8:30am.

It is a little longer than 5 hours.

I just need to find someone who has done the route before as a guide. Some people will not walk if they do not have someone who has attempted the route. Nothing is finalised, I need to find a guide and determine which date best suits everyone. If I can fit it in, I might be able to walk the route before the hike date to become the guide if necessary.

Im eager for the saturday the 19th. And im happy to test the route with you. The 27th would be a bit challenging after the fun run at elgin grabouw.

The date is set to the 3rd of February, 08:00 at the gates.

Vehicle entry is R5 and R15 per person, more details on the right column of this page.

We are doing the dome, map.

Hopefully the weather will play along.

Bring lots of water, the hike is over 5 hours.

The hike will be done at a slow leisurely pace, for those concerned (lots of breaks).

Please indicate if you will be going.

There is a Google event if you would prefer indicating there.

I will confirm numbers near the end of the week.

REMINDER

The hike is next Sunday (3rd February).

We are currently around eight (8) hikers. Hopefully we will end up at just over ten (10).

Most hikers have not hiked in quite a while.

This is a great opportunity to make new friends... so invite others to join.
It is an open invite.

Remember to bring snacks and water along on the hike.

UPDATE

We are working on getting the early-bird key to get into the reserve early. This way we can start the hike at 6am. The reason for this is to do the ascent when it is cooler and to come down the mountain in the afternoon heat. I have spoken to a few people who are in favour of this. It will be completely understood if you cannot make the new time. If we cannot get the key then we will be looking at starting the hike from the Helderberg College or even from another location that is accessible that early in the morning.

Shantelle can you keep us updated on the progress being made on the key please as I will need to make alternative arrangements rather earlier than later. Additionally anyone who has invited people outside of this mailing list, please inform them of the change in time.
