What version of Java is this, and Windows, Mac or Linux?  Also how are you launching Autoplot--using the single-jar or one of the .dmg or .exe releases?  Last, it's possible you have a misformatted recent bookmarks list.  Could you move ~/autoplot_data (in your home directory) to ~/autoplot_data.bak and see if it initializes properly (creating a new ~/autoplot_data)?

Windows 11 Pro
Java 8

My action plan:

  1. Downloaded the .exe from the link: https://autoplot.org/latest/

  2. Unpacked it into the Program Files folder

  3. Used it for 2 days while it worked

  4. One fine day, Autoplot started showing only the splash screen

  5. Unsuccessful attempt to reinstall Autoplot

  6. Checked the error logs

Misformatted recent bookmarks list
Fixed it, everything worked. Thanks!

interesting, let me know if it happens again.  (Or send the file ~/autoplot_data/bookmarks/recent.xml if there's nothing private in there.)  I'll put in code where you hit the error, catching it, since I'd rather it give up trying to load the recent entries than to fail completely.)
