From a private email thread, continuing here:

takes an order of magnitude (< 1 sec) less time to plot than this (~ 20 sec)

I could imagine the user wanting the option of forcing Autoplot to download the file locally if they know it will lead to a faster render.  Thoughts?
Maybe there should be a parameter that requests this behavior (or the other, and downloading the whole thing should be the default).

A parameter option is a good idea.   I am not sure it it would be better if it were the default.  For netcdf, probably yes.

I'll add a parameter that will make a local copy first.  (How about local=yes, so we can have local=no if we change the default?)

Isn't this only going to be for netcdf?  Would this be relevant for openDAP as well?

This would be mostly for netCDF.  I'll put the question about OPeNDAP for discussion on the TSDS telecon.  I think (OPeNDAP) aggregation complicates things.
