AutoNotes not working for me

I downloaded the trial, opened up the application and created a note.
I then closed the application and re-opened it. The note list came up
blank, in other words the note I created previously had not been
saved. This is not what I expected from watching the videos on the
website.

So I tried creating a new note repository in my Dropbox folder. This
created 4 identical repository entries in the preference pane and
resulted in many popup messages telling me there were duplicate
entries.

Either I'm doing something wrong, or there are some substantial bugs
which need fixing before I would consider using it. From viewing the
videos though, it looks like it could be a slick notes application, so
if I can see it working reliably I will likely buy it.

I'm running latest Snow Leopard.

Hi,

There have been a few glitches with Snow Leopard that will be
corrected in a release about to go out.

Can I get you to download this beta version and try it out?

http://www.tech.com.au/Automaton/Downloads/Automaton1.8beta.dmg

With the duplicate entries in preferences, yes I've seen that and it
shouldn't be happening any more. Give it a go with this beta version
and let me know?

With not saving the note, yes this remains a bug, but only happens if
you quit the application, as opposed to just closing the window. The
general idea with Automaton is you leave it running all the time,
because a lot of its functions are in the background.

However rest assured that this bug will be fixed shortly. In the
meantime, try and Command-W to only close the window rather than
exiting the app.

Hi, Thanks for the quick reply

I installed the beta, took me a few minutes to figure out how to
disable Typer/Clips/Filer (I use Hazel/TextExpander/Launchbar for
those). Closing the notes window rather than the application
preserves the notes as you described. Creating a new note repository
still pops up a number of windows, as does trying to add an existing
repository.

A couple of other immediate observations:
- Trying to print a note doesn't do anything, no print dialog box
appears
- At the bottom-right of a note there's a checkbox entitled "Is Home"
- is this something to do with the wiki/web structure? I couldn't
find any explanation in the help section.

Cheers
B.

Hi,

I put out a new release just now that fixes the note saving problem.

The Is Home check box designates that note as the Home note. When you
press Home on
the toolbar it takes you to that note. It is also the default note
when you open Notes. Only
one note can be the Home note.

I'll take a look at the other problems you mention and hopefully get
them fixed shortly. Thanks for the feedback!

Hi,

I see the problem with creating a Notes Repository.

Since a Notes Repository is in fact, just a regular folder, and could
just as easily be created in Finder, that's probably why that got
missed in testing. As a work around, create a folder, and if desired,
add it to the preferences dialog.

With printing, a work around is to right click the toolbar and select
Customize. Drag the "Open" button to your toolbar. Then click done.
Now when you click Open, it will open the document in your default
app, which is probably TextEdit. Then you can print it from there.

In any case, hope to get a fix for both these problems out shortly.

Hi again

I can confirm that V1.9 seems to have fixed the "quitting doesn't save
the note" problem, this is good

A couple of other observations/usability suggestions
- The "Open Recent" menu item never seems to have any entries
- The notes window always opens with the Tag and Notes drawers
closed. This is good if you just want to enter a note, but if you
want to find a note you have to manually open the drawers. Can there
be an option to remember their closed/open state for next time you
open the window?
- In the Notes drawer, if you expand the size of the drawer, next time
you open the window you have to re-expand it
- An auto-completion in the Tag entry field would be great
- In the website video covering the preferences, you can read the
license keys. You might want to disable those keys......

Keep up the good work, and please keep the focus on ease of use and
simplicity.

Cheers
B.

Excellent! That was very quick, and seems to have covered my last
round of suggestions. Good work, and good support!

As an observation, I had been running the Automaton demo V1.9 and when
I clicked the "Check for Updates" menu item, I got an error message,
so I downloaded the AutoNotes application from the website, being as
that's all I need right now. When I loaded V1.10 Of AutoNotes and
checked for updates, it told me I had the latest, so that seems to
work.

Hi!

What error message did you get?

Keep an eye on it, but the autoupdates don't seem to have had problems
up to now.

I get an error box saying "Update Error!". The console gives the
following:

9/28/09 8:00:02 PM Automaton[517] Sparkle Error: An error occurred in
retrieving update information. Please try again later.

Also I went to shut down my system and got a message saying that
AutoNotes would not quit. Manually quitting from the menu works OK,
but right-clicking the dock icon and selecting quit, only quits the
notebook window, leaving the application running.

Cheers

Oops, forgot the second line of the Console entry:

9/28/09 8:00:02 PM Automaton[517] Sparkle Error (continued): An error
occurred while parsing the update feed.

Cheers

You're right, the Automaton update feed was corrupted. I take it you
were running Automaton and not AutoNotes?

Correct. I'm just running AutoNotes now, and that feed seems to be
working - it reports I'm running the latest version.
