Not really sure what's going on here. I have an automation set up to turn DND on/off when I go to / leave work. When it should be changing DND state, it will die with "java.lang.IllegalStateException: Notification service not running". This is a BB Priv with the latest official software.
I'm also having an issue where I can't disable location access notifications from DTEK for Automate; it doesn't appear to like your permission package system. (Is it really necessary in lieu of the new runtime permissions framework?) I don't know if that's related or not.

Have you enabled Notification access for Automate in system settings?

Likely after a Automate update or device reboot. Android has problems keeping Accessibility and Notification services enabled and running.

I had this issue too on a Redmi Note 4 Global (MIUI 9). Found out that you can enable DND by setting notifications volume to 0 (anything <= 10) and setting ringer volume back to where you want them. To turn DND off, set notifications volume to 10 or more (or to the ringer volume you want) and adjust ringer volume again.
This is working fine for some time. I don't know if it works on other phones.
