I wish to assign a hot-key combination to invoke a script, e.g., Super+z. While I can assign an abbreviation, I'd prefer the hotkey approach. BUT, it fails. For example,

Click Press to Set
  it greys-out
Click the Super dialog button
it turns white and I see Press a key...
Press z
  nothing happens
Click on OK
  nothing happens
Click Cancel
  nothing happens
Click the x to dismiss Set Hotkey dialog
After long pause, get window might be responding
Click Yes
Autokey crashes

Different variants of attempts fail to produce results. What's the problem? This happens on two different PCs running Ubuntu 16.04, running Autokey-gtk 0.90.4

Thanks.

Welcome to the list, Roger.

If I understand correctly, your difficulty is caused by the somewhat
confusing UI.

When you set a hotkey, it's best to pretend that those modifier buttons
are just indicators (i.e. don't press them).

Instead,

Click Press to Set
Press *and hold* the Super key on your keyboard
Press z (just as you would to use the hotkey)
Release both
Click on OK

All should be good. Your hotkey should be assigned.

Joe

P.S. While the original AutoKey branch (0.90.4 through 0.91.1) still
works (I'm using it), it is no longer supported (except on this list).
Everyone is encouraged to upgrade to 0.93.x which is available from
https://github.com/guoci/autokey-py3
See:
https://github.com/autokey-py3/autokey/wiki/Installing

The newer version has a developer. It has a significant number of bug
fixes and a couple of really nice new features

Joe,

Thanks so much. YES, it's the UI. It is hard to master. Your instructions worked.

I searched and searched for an answer, to no avail. I did find that the built-in help and web page links -->404 errors.

It appears that the github page
    https://github.com/autokey/autokey/commit/12bd48d1c5b183f0843bba9eaf5af72a37961612
is way out-of-date, correct?
And, I see that
    https://github.com/autokey/autokey/wiki
is inactive but it has useful info, e.g.,
    https://github.com/autokey/autokey/wiki/Special-Keys

As Abraham Lincoln said, "Everything you read on the Internet is true!"

Glad that I found this Group. Wish there was an up-to-date page WITH instructions on how to use the clumsy UI for assigning abbreviations and hot keys. Of course I'm sure that it made sense to the person who programed it.

FINALLY, I use Autokey reguarly to speed up programing web pages (html). Now I'm trying it to speed up other, repetitive tasks with scripts.

Thanks a lot.

/Roger

Glad we could help.

Almost everything has been copied from the original branch of AutoKey to
the new -py3 branch on Github.
So always go there first for anything AutoKey-related.

After we lost Chris Deckter (he quit after many years), we had several
developers helping out for a short while, but nothing new for a few
years now.

Fortunately "Guoci" had already cloned AutoKey (autokey-py3) and
converted it from Python 2.7 to 3.x while fixing and adding things.

Now we have a new developer working on autokey-py3. He  has limited
time, but does keep it relatively bug free and installable via pip.

Apparently, building packages for the PPA is a lot of work, so he has
only built the 16.04 version so far.

LOL. You are cordially invited and encouraged to write one! I edited the
old installation guide that Keith wrote and will help as I can. one or
two other people might help as well.

If you have any generically useful phrases or macros, feel free to
contribute them. Last I looked, automating HTML is kind of tricky, so
things that work are valuable. I can add them to the wiki.

If you're doing a lot of scripting, you may find xdotool very useful as
well. I know how to do simple things with it.

Joe, does anyone know if the latest version of Autokey improves upon this incredibly clumsy UI?  If so, it would be well worth my time to upgrade.  If not, does anyone know if there is any theoretical reason why the UI cannot be improved?   In 90.4 on Ubuntu 16.04 the UI is incredibly missleading.  I had the same issue Roger B had when I started.
