I can build parts in model space, assemble them in assembly and
produce a
finished product in paper space. I have even made BOM work ( poor
as it
is ).
But I have not found a way to get parts to appear as
subassemblies. I can
name subassemblies. I can make instances of the name but there is
nothing
but space there. I think I need to pick parts for the subassemby,
but there
are no prompts when to pick. Have I missed something?

William,
Just a side note...there was some discussion lately about targets and my
notes happened to be open beside me...
The hotkey for edit target in 1.2 is "ZZ" .... I hope.

In 1.2, if I can remember correctly, you have to change the "edit
target" to get into a "fresh area" to define a subassembly instancing
parts into this new area.
You then use the edit target to go back to the main assembly -edit
target=filename- and instance your subassembly via the... uhh.... well
just press "NN".... it is called the catalog in 2.0
I think the edit target button is the one that looks like a red
bullseye??
Fortunately, when you get into 2.0, all of this "target" stuff from 1.2
finally makes sense.

If you've created 2d dwg views the answer is "not without losing the
views". If you havent yet created the views or dontr mind recreating
them, then use the amcatalog and externalize the 1 part in your assy
dwg and then open the new part file to create your views.

This may not leave you with the most compact and efficient file, but you
don't have to redraw your 2d stuff again as if you used externalize.
