I'm getting a lot of crashing in Inventor. My current problem is trying to
save a drawing file as a DWG (to send to a supplier who doesn't use
Inventor). Inventor starts exporting, gets to a certain entity (the message
bar reads "Exporting Entity # 552"), and crashes - sometimes Inventor just
disappears, sometimes it generates an error log. I'm having this problem in
5.3, and I had it in 5.0 as well. I've tried rebooting, reinstalling, doing
it on a different computer, and nothing helps. Some files export, some
won't. I'm not sure what element is causing the problem - I've narrowed it
down to the base view (by deleting views, dimensions, title block, etc), but
beyond that, I'm stuck. Any suggestions?

I just had the same problem. Finally traced it to a problem with a
phantom dimension. For some unknown reason every time I tried to add
a dimension to one area it would display until I clicked to locate it
at which point it would just disappear. When trying to export the
file it would crash every time. I deleted the sheet where the phantom
dimensions were apparently located
and the file then exported properly. Still cannot get it to put in
the dimension between the two line end points (but that is another
story). You may have to delete the sheet that generates the error and
then recreate that sheet one step at a time. That is what I had to do
and now have the DWG file for each sheet. Since the dimension that
was creating my error was not visible there was no way to detect or
delete it (that I could find) without deleting the entire sheet.

You must install Voloview 2 from the Inventor CD. The wizard stops with that
error message when it can't preview the drawing.

box (Layers and Objects Import Options), I always get an error message which
says "An unsupported operation was attempted". THis has been happening since
Inventor 5 - in Inventor 4 I was able to open DWGs, but they didn't come in
to scale.

That is comparing the VV that came on Inventor 5 CD to the one on the AIS CD. It doesn't
say anything about 2 versions on the AIS cd's

Make sure you install VVE2 from Disk 1 of 2 and NOT disk 2 of 2 from the
AIS5 CD.

Well I know I am still recovering from the weekend <G> but it sure reads to me as they
are comparing it to Inventor 5 (not 5.3) software CD It is not well worded no matter what
they are trying to say 8^)

You want to know if the version of Volo® View Express 2 software supplied with the
Autodesk InventorT Series (on CD1) is different from the version on the Autodesk InventorT
5 software CD.

Kent,

Seeing as I wrote this....

We are comparing the VVE2 version on the Inventor 5 install CD to the VVE2
on CD1 of the AIS install. Is that not clear in the solution? I reread
what I wrote and it seems to still make sense to me.

We are publishing another solution highlighting this fact.
It will be TS72303.

Here is the contents:

Problem Description:
You want to know what the difference is between the version of Volo® View
Express software on the Autodesk® Mechanical Desktop® 6 CD of the Autodesk
InventorT Series and the version on the Autodesk Inventor 5.3 CD of the
Autodesk Inventor Series.

Resolution:
The version of Volo View Express installed from the Autodesk Mechanical
Desktop 6 CD (CD2) of the Autodesk Inventor Series is version is 1.14 (build
530), and the version of Volo View Express installed from the Autodesk
Inventor 5.3 CD (CD1) of the Autodesk Inventor Series is version 2 (build
644)
Note: Autodesk Product Support strongly recommends that you install Volo
View Express 2 (build 644) before you install Autodesk Inventor 5.3. Volo
View Express 2 is required for some Autodesk Inventor 5.3 functionality.

Jason,

Its just that it doesnt mention that the VVE2 on CD2 of AIS5 is in fact
different.

I knew the facts, but an unsuspecting reader like kent would certainly get
confused. His comments are proof that he in fact was confused.

So, I had a hunch, and it was correct. Amazing!

I kind of wondered if maybe you wrote that. 8^)

The copy below reads a lot clearer to this easily confused old country boy<g> I think the
thing about it that kept making it confusing for me was calling it Inventor 5 instead of
Inventor 5.3. Thanks for looking into it.
