In drawings with many layers (100-200) it would be an advantage to structure
the layers in main-layers and sub-layers belonging to each main-layer.
Any available solutiotion for AutoCAD R14 or LT for this purpose?

Very little works with LT, but for your R14 check out Tony Tanzillo's layer tree
tool.

The most straightforward way of getting the effect you are talking about
is by naming your layers with logical codes.

EX-whatever is an existing layer

EX-D-whatever is existing stuff that gets demolished

EX-D-whatever-X is is existing stuff that gets demolished that you wnt
turned off most of the time

LAYER OFF *-X turns off the layers you want off most of the time

LAYER OFF * ON EX-* turns off all the proposed elements & shows only
existing elements

we used to have the same problem with the amount of layers created in our
plans.

try switching to the AIA cad layer guidelines.
this may give you the "breakout" you are looking for.

then we incorporate the layer manager. things work great.
