We're working on a project that requires us to place Chinese text into
our drawings. We are using a package called RichWin to generate the
text, but because AutoCAD R14 doesn't support 2 byte Asian characters,
the chinese text looks like gibberish.

The people that make RichWin advise me that there exists a "plugin" for
R14 which will permit the North American version to support 2 byte Asian
characters. Does anyone know if this is true, and if so, where can I
find this plugin?

I look forward to your comments and suggestions.

Any version of AutoCAD will DISPLAY these characters if the computer has the
proper (chinese) font installed and the style is defined properly in
AutoCAD. Editing is a different story.

I was working for a company where two or three of the NT workstations were
the Pan Chinese version of AutoCAD. I found this to be the best solution
(above third party software) because all of the interface is in English but
it allowed for either type of Chinese characters (Simplified or
Traditional). Of course there were a few strange things that happened (like
sometimes Word Documents might come out a bit strange) but not very often.
I found the third party software to give me more problems than the Chinese
OS, especially since we were communicating on a regular basis with a Chinese
company.

I have one or two Chinese SHX fonts (I believe they are the type used in
Shanghai, the GB(RPC) kind). If you need them (i.e. you don't want to use
TTF fonts or the software you installed doesn't have any) I will put them in
the customer-files group (i will require your response before I put them
there though -- I'm lazy and don't want to dig them up right now, especially
if you don't need them)

Hello Phillip.

AutoCAD supports 2byte Asian characters in fact.
Do you know Chinese coding are 2ways, big5(Taiwan) and GB(RPC)?
Which fonts do you want to use, Windows TrueType font (.ttf and .ttc)
or AutoCAD Shape font (.shx)?
You're using RichWin, I don't know the products.
However It let your computer to install Chinese TrueType fonts.

1: run AutoCAD.
2: type STYLE[Enter] and show font style setting dialog.
3: You can choose Creating new style or Redefine existing "STANDARD" font style.
4: Allocate the font style to Chinese TrueType font which you installed.
5: Hit apply button. then hit close button.

You will get more info at R14 bonus pack WNEWCP document.

Well, it took a lot of work, but i found on the china.autodesk.com
site a ZIP file containing three GB type SHX fonts, so I don't think
that I'll be needing yours; however, if you happen to have HZTXT.SHX
or HZKK.SHX on your system, I would love to get my hands on them.

Thanks for the info.
