Seriously, I'd say it's 10 to 1 you're using TrueType fonts. It's a known
bug.

I've had this problem after opening a large dwg. To cure this
very annoying problem just do a 'zoom extents' after you notice
it. Works everytime for me.

You have what could one of several problems. You did not give the full
details of how your drawing may be set up so I will run through list of
things to check to help you in tracking down the problem.
1/ Type in at the command prompt "viewres" and see what the setting is,
this system variable can be set between 100 to 20,000 the Autocad default is
100 if it is set higher set it back to 100. This setting tells Autocad how
smooth circles should be displayed. If you set it too high it can chew up
allot of video memory and slow the drawing to a crawl.
2/ List your font styles, type "style" at the command prompt and see if you
have allot of TrueType fonts being used. Reset them to Romans.shx and this
should speed up the drawing.
3/ Are you using paper space if so how many view ports do you have open or
are you using the old multiple title block system for different plot states.
If so have a look at layer manager under the bonus routines and set up your
plot states and save each one under Layer Manager and then delete the access
title blocks and view ports.
4/ Are you working in Paper Space and switching to floating model space, if
so stop doing this as paper space is mostly for plotting not editing the
drawing.
5/ Are you x referencing big time, try reducing the number of Xrefs if you
can.
6/ Have you inserted some very large blocks such as the Base Building this
can slow down snap picks quite a bit as Autocad searches through it's data
base to pick the point you have selected. Break up the drawing into Xrefs
to reduce the searching problem. As well try "purging the drawing of unused
blocks.
7/ The drawing is whopping huge. 4 meg or more. Again try breaking it up
as Xrefs by discipline and see if this helps.
8/ Drawing is mega huge 10 meg or more (electrical drawings like some of
the ones I work on are connected to data bases and can be this big) Buy
more ram. These days a 64 meg simm is only about $65.00 cnd.
9/ This list gets allot longer when it comes to hardware, check into a
faster processor video card etc..
Hope this helps
