Has anyone else ever had the experience of the ACAD14.CFG file being
trashed? About three times now, all at random times, we've had AutoCAD
start up and complain that it hasn't been authorised. The last time it
was on a machine that had 14 installed for over a year. The CFG file
was trashed.

Any idea what causes this?

Yes, I've had this happen, see post from a few days ago titled "Fatal Error

I haven't found out why though.

I've not experienced this but by the sounds of it, Autocad crashes with the
system and is not able to update the .cfg file normally. You may be able to
retrieve the old cfg file that would be saved as Acad.bak in the same directory.
Just rename the file to have a .cfg extension instead of a .bak extension. If
you made no configuration changes, you should have lost nothing

You're not alone. We've had the same problem. Not sure why, it always
happens after a system crash.

Used to have this problem a lot in DOS versions. We usually kept a
backup copy of the acad.cfg file around. I would suggest creating one
so that you could easily restore it next time it crashes. Another
poster mentioned that AutoCAD creates an acad.bak for your acad.cfg
already. If that's so use it for now, but I would create my own in the
future just in case.

Thinking back a few years, I had the same problem. I seem to remember
something about multiple cfg files, and AutoCAD could not figure out which
one to update. I used to use cfg files in dedicated directories for
different purposes, and that worked fine as long as I specified one of the
directories with the /c switch. If AutoCAD was run without the /c switch,
as when you double-clicked on a file in Explorer, it creates a new cfg file
in the executable directory. All is well so far. The next time AutoCAD is
run using one of the /c switches all is well until there is reason to
change the cfg file, like it does when closing. At that point, it just
might be that AutoCAD is looking at the cfg file in the executable
directory as well as the one pointed to with the /c switch ..........

I've slept a little since then, but I know it had to do with multiple cfg
files. Perhaps someone from Autodesk could clarify this issue.

Donna,

I have not had your problem per se. But have had some problems with my
AcadR14.cfg file in the past. I find it best to create a subdirectory with
save to and read only priviliges on my hard drive and then I copy or save
to it copies of my AcadR14.cfg as well as any other inportant configuration
files. This allows me to quickly restore the damaged or lost file with out
having to go through a complete reconfiuration or reload of the program and
the ensuing contigurations required.

was one of the best releases of ACAD <LOL!>

Always keep things backed up... been around waaay to long to trust
anything.

thanks!

Jeff,

didn't wait for a system crash here - just bellied up after turning the
machine on first thing in the morning. Aren't computers fun <LOL!>

David,

good thought - I remember playing games with the DOS versions and multiple
CFG's. Haven't done that with Windows though, and with the profiles in 14
haven't found a need to lately. I did double check for multiple files on the
machines that had problems, and they were clean.

Thanks!

Michael,

Yep, backups are the way to go. It only took me a couple moments to correct
the situation, but since it was the third machine to display such behaviour, I
started to wonder why.

Thanks!

Ian,

Good point. I'll have to do some sluthing to see what may be writing to the
file. Fortunatly it doesn't happen often, unfortunately that's gonna make
troubleshooting a hassle <LOL!>

Abdallah,

No crash this time, just didn't work. Anyway, I've learned long ago...(I confess,
I've been running ACAD since release 2.14 in 1986) to never trust the program or the
computers that run it. We keep an entire copy of the program squirreled away in a
safe place on the network. No one runs it, it's just there as a backup for trashed
files. You'd be amazed how often that's kept us from having to do a total
reinstall!

Thanks!
