the paths are correct. I think there could be problrm with the xref files
themselves as I cant x reference them, although I can open them with no
problem at all.

When you attempt to xref them and it fails, do you get any error messages in
the command window? For example, if you attempt to xref a drawing with a
long block name, you will get a "error: concatenating the dependent layer
name..would exceed 31 characters" message.

I have gotten the *Invalid* message when the Xref drawing had problems
as you suspected. I have found most of my problem drawings were
originally imported into AutoCAD before R14 and snuck some invalid items
past AutoCAD. Try wblocking out the Xref drawing and do an AUDIT on the
new drawing it to see if that corrects the problem.

I recently ran into this same xref problem. The only way I found to fix the
*Invalid* drawing was to create a dxf file of the drawing. Then bring it
back into a new drawing file with dxfin and save over the existing xref
drawing. Audit, Recover and WBlock did not do anything to correct the
problem.

This is the problem I encounter when tring to insert an Xref or try to change
its location
Reload Xref XE-L5F: D:\osman\Julian\E\Xe-l5f.dwg
Regenerating drawing.
*Invalid*

Command: xref

Attach Xref XE-L5F: D:\osman\Julian\E\Xe-l5f.dwg
Regenerating drawing.
*Invalid*

I also got this problem from another drawing
Command:
AutoCAD menu utilities loaded.
This is another problem I got with Xref
Command: _open
Converting old drawing.

This is definately the same problem I found. Converting to dxf and back to dwg
managed to fix most of he drawings with Xref problems although a few cause this
error when converting back to dwg:

Command: dxfin
Error in BLOCK_RECORD Table
Invalid symbol table record name: on line 5338.
Invalid or incomplete DXF input -- drawing discarded.
Press ENTER to continue: *Cancel*

There is what seems to be a problem with the name of a blck, or maybe te lack
of a name, does this error look familiar to anyone?

Make sure the block name does not end in a space or have invalid
characters in the name. I once had a group of drawings where all of the
block names had an extra space at the end of the name. R14 would open
the drawing but you couldn't Xref it into another drawing and it gave me
errors when I tried to DXFIN the file. In order to correct the error I
had to rename all of the block records, block definitions, and the
inserts in the DXF file.
