I have a 16 button puck which I use with R14, and I want one button to
work exactly as the escape key. ^C^C works, but it does not get rid of
selected objects or grips. I just need the command line for the menu
file, if there is such a thing.

Try this
^C^CSELECT;^C^C
It will cancel a command then start the select command (which will get rid
of grips) then cancel the select command. It's a workaround but should do
what you need.
