New Computer Panning Lockup

I have built my best friend a new computer based on a Abit motherboard and a AMD Athlon 64 3200+ processor. He is running 1 GIG of memory with a Nvidia FX5500 256 Meg Video card. The video driver is the most current from Nvidia. He experiences computer lockup when panning within his drawings. His AutoCAD is 2004 SR1a. Has anyone experienced this problem and do you have a solution? Thank you in advance.

Knock down or turn off video card hardware acceleration in Windows, does the
problem go away?
And test with no apps running in the system tray, does it still crash when
you pan?
Also test in safe mode, does it still lock up?
