Most digitizers that worked in Acad R12 and R13 are fully compatible with
Acad R14. You may want to consider the following before getting rid of
your digitizers:

There are three functions the digitizer performs that a mouse will never
be able to perform.

1.) You can program your digitizer's puck buttons to perform Autocad
commands. You can actually get 3 sets of commands on each button. This
give you commands at your finger tips. No time consuming typing or hunting
through pull down menus or for icons.

2.) You are able to use the Template that comes along with Acad 14. The
template allows you to simply pick on the command you wish to execute
without taking your eyes off of the drawing. The template is also
customizable and many add-on programs provide there own section for the
Template.

3.) The digitizer allows you to trace an existing drawing into acad at a 1
to 1 ratio using Autocad's calibration command. This eliminates the need
to completely redraw existing paper drawings to add them to Autocad. It
also allows you to put hand made changes to a drawing in easily.

Along with these 3 functions the tablet puck also provides a smooth
movement eliminating the touchiness you may experience with a mouse. The
functions listed above help boost your productivity even in Acad 14.

Hi Amy and Mark,

The Calcomp drivers are giving me a VERY hard time! I upgraded from acadr12
dos to acadr14 w95. I use Summagraphics drivers in dos. I installed the
Calcomp drivers for Win95, and with the wintab selection in "preferences", I
was able to make it work very fine and rearrange all the tablet menu, so a lot
of macros and stuff from r12 worked all right in r14. The problem is: I still
need to work in r12 untill all my LISP files are corrected to fit the r14
environment. When I go there, the driver is not installing itself properly,
disabling the tablet! Tablet is not responding! I tried to only use the tablet
as a mouse in r14 (current system pointing device), but nothing worked back in
r12 again...

When I try to use the ol' Summa drivers in r14 the tablet WORKS, but the
sensation is not very good. I mean it is as if the cursor was not mooving as
fast as the puck.It is trailing and comes in position later. It is hard to
bring the cursor to the right spot with precision.

So, I decided to let go the tablet, and customize the menu to bring all
(almost) the menu items from the tablet to the screen as buttons and flyouts!
I bought r14 as soon as it was available, but I'm still working in r12 because
it FEELS better with the pointing device. When I have time I will do that, but
for now, I have to be productive, so I use what works well...r12 with Summa
drivers!

Thanks,
Yvon

Hello Yvon,

The problem you are experience between the ease of switching back and
forth from a Windows based AutoCAD and a Dos based AutoCAD is a common
problem. The problem is cause when loading a wintab driver into your
Windows environment. The wintab driver will locate the digitizer change
the format it is sending and claim the port. This causes an issue when you
are trying to load up another digitizer in Acad for Dos. This driver is
expecting the digitzer to report in its' default format and to use the
comport the driver has been directed to in the Acad configuration program.
We recommend trying the following which elliminates the hold the wintab
driver has on the comport and switches the tablet back to its' default
settings.

1.) You will need to run your Dos Acad in straight Dos without Win 95
running in the background.
To do this you will need to Shut Down and Restart your Win 95
While your system is restarting look for a black screen that says
"STARTING WIN 95...." accross the top
When you see this screen hit your F8 key
This will bring up a dos menu
Choose the COMMAND PROMPT ONLY option

2.) Before entering into Acad 12 Dos you must turn the digitizer off and
then back on restoring the default settings Acad for Dos is looking for

3.) Enter into Acad 12 Dos from the Command Prompt and the digitizer should
work

When you want to use the digitizer in Windows just simple reboot.

It works!
Thanks Amy! Why isn't it written somewhere in the Readme file or something?
Like you said, (was it you?) It is a common problem... We bought Acadr14 the
same week in was first available, but never got it to work because of a lack of
time reconfiguring the menu so it can be operational with ONLY a mouse. So much
time waisted!

Now, if you'd like to answer another question? Why can't I configure the 4
buttons the way they worked in Dos? I only can get the Left & Right click
buttons. The other 2 are useless. Loading up MYMENU doesn't change anything,
even though the buttons menu is present. 0=pick 1=Enter 2=Cancel 3=Ortho.

Thanks again, you just made my MONTH!
Yvon :o)

I have the same button problem and have emailed calcomp support direct, but have no
feasible response yet.

Hi Amy!

You just made my day again! It works! And very fine! BUT (because there is always buts) I
loose the right click functions for all other applications... I guess there is a price to
pay!?!?

Thanks!

Yvon,

You might want to try the Virtual Tablet demo (3rd party software on the
Autodesk website). This wintab driver lets you use the buttons on your
digitizer puck while in Autocad, and as a pointing device with other
programs.

I tried something MORE simple and it works... I just reset the tablet while the
computer reboots. I made AutoCAD r12 use a Dos configuration in the short cut.
Click on the shortcut, reset the tablet while rebooting in Dos and, Voilà! No
need to reboot with command prompt only and type "acadr12".

Hello Yvon,

I am glad to hear that you are up and running. I wish I had some good
news on the right click issue but unfortunately that is the way it goes
with our wintab driver. I will keep you posted if I run into a fix for
this issue.

Thanks,
