I plan to install autoCAD 14 or maybe 2000. I will use a Pentium III
450mhz,
a 9.1gig Quantum Fireball KA 7200 rpm, 128 MB Ram and a 19" monitor using a
resolution of 1280x1600. Any suggestion for the video card?
If what I heard is right, autoCAD needs a video card optimized for OpenGL
API. I have 5 choices in the sub-300$US category. Of course any other
suggestion is welcome... Which one is best for CAD?

1- 3D labs Oxygen VX1 32MB AGP using a Permedia 3 chip
2- Any Riva TNT2 ultra 32MB AGP (Guillemot's Xentor sounds good)
3- Matrox G400 Max (I heard that the OpenGL drivers were not optimized yet)
4-DMD FireGL 1000 Pro 8 MB (the cheapest)
5-ATI rage Fury pro 32MB using a Rage 128 pro chip

I can remember seeing a post from someone at AutoDesk that gave a web site
listing some video cards and their performances. If someone still has that
site could you post it please.

I found that site that does compare video cards.

I'm the hardware product manager for a large reseller in Minnesota. I'd
recommend the following cards:

Elsa Gloria Synergy-II ($299 w/32MB, $249 w/16MB) - TNT2 processor with
totally rewritten OpenGL drivers (twice as fast as any other TNT2 based
card) and excellent drivers for AutoCAD 2000 and 3DS. Very very reliable.
OEM'd by Compaq and HP. (Elsa's drivers ARE worth paying extra for!)

Oxygen VX1 - ($239 w/32MB) - GLint3 processor. Outstanding AutoCAD
performance in both 2D and 3D. Some stability and compatibility problems.
OEM'd by Gateway.

Elsa Gloria Synergy ($129 w/8MB) - Excellent 2D/3D performance (though
limited to 16-bit z-buffer) and Elsa drivers. Will outperform Matrox G400,
TNT2 cards (except Synergy-II), and anything from #9 or ATI when running
AutoCAD or 3D Studio. Ultra reliable and downright cheap. PCI version
available, too. OEM'd by HP and Compaq.

Other TNT2 Cards ($149-249) - great 3D games performance and OK for AutoCAD
and 3D Studio. Good choice for home users. Diamond Viper V770 OEM'd by
Dell.

Avoid -

Matrox (worst OpenGL)
ATI (unstable OpenGL)
Voodoo anything (very poor OpenGL)
Savage4 (poor OpenGL)

The above are fine for 2D only and may be great for games, but their OpenGL
ICD drivers are not up to snuff when compared with cards from Elsa and 3D
Labs.

Want more performance????

Oxygen GVX1 - fastest MCAD performance available for under $1,000 - sells
for about $789. Some compatibility and stability problems. OEM'd by
Compaq, HP and Gateway.

Diamond Fire GL1 - fastest 3D Studio performance available for under $1,000
and while not quite as fast as the GVX1 for AutoCAD, it's much faster than
the under $300 cards. Needs dual processor system for best performance.
Appears to be very stable. Street price is about $869. OEM'd by IBM and
Dell.

Jim,

How do the ELSA Gloria Synergy II and Oxygen VX1 perform on games? Are
OpenGL cards good for these applications? I'm looking for a card that will
work great in MDT 3.01/4, 3DS, as well as games.

Thanks,

DREW

Drew, I'm looking at the same two cards, and have the same questions. (For my
home system.) Let me know if you find anything out, and I'll do the same.
