Hi
could someone tell me if it is possibleto protect/lock a dwg file (acad
2000) so that others could just open and look the file and not to edit it?
Thanx
Aleksander

Your only choices are CADLock (http://www.cadlock.com) or to convert
your files to some format other than .dwg.

so errors or anything that you find offending is not there on
purpose it's just due to the translation.

My preferred avenue is Acrobat(Abode) for viewing/collaboration.

Try MINSERT .

Use this comand, then enter ~ to browse the drawing you want to insert.
Xscale =1 , Y scale =1, number of rows = 2, number of columns = 1, distance
between rows=0
This drawing can be send for consultation because it cannot be exploded.

I know that's Autodesk's recommendation, but I sure wouldn't do that.
Technically --and only technically-- you're correct; that particular
drawing can't be edited as it is. But the drawing _must_ contain the
original MINSERT'ed block.

It takes about 10 seconds to re-INSERT the block (not minsert) and
explode or wblock it. Poof! All that 'security' gone.

If someone has only a beginners knowledge of AutoCAD he can crack this
"secutity". (E.g. command _wblock and then _explode)

To the best of my knowledge there is no way to send a cad file that someone
can't get around - it may take them a little effort and some expertise, but
if they're good they'll be able to open the file.
I always recommend sending a .PDF file (using Acrobat or Ghostscript).

Let me know if you know someone who can modify a file created with the
Multiple insert comand, (MINSERT) with for example: two rows at 0 distance.
:))))

I can. You can. Anyone with AutoCAD can.
( I can, you can, we all can together....)

As numerous posts stated, simply INSERT the block, explode and modify.
A) If a MINSERT exists, the block's defined in the drawing.
B) Any block defined in a drawing may be INSERTed

I know it and all who learn(ed) AutoCAD in my class(es) know it and a
lot of others know it (I guess) and ...
E.g. (one of any possibilies): WBLOCK -> export the block definition to
a new drawing (and - if you want to stay the current drawing e.g.
because of the creating time or other causes - after deleting all
entities in the current drawing reinsert this new created drawing)

How about if you Wblock Equals the minserted block then erase the first one and
reinsert the one you Wblock Equaled out and chose explode from the insert
dialogue box. It worked for me.

Best options are to save it as a read only and hope the other person
is not smart enough to just do a save as. Another option is sending
them a volo view drawing.
