I have seen a lot on this subject but I am still not sure about
something. Can I search Dwg props without opening the dwg. I do not want
to change the values and I will be using vba so Acad will be open. I
would like to build a search engine that would search across a set of
typical detail dwg's and show them in a preview window. The user would
then be able to insert the dwg of his choice on to a detail sheet.
I would like to build this tool but if I do not have to that would be
even better. If anyone knows of a Product that might do what I want I
would appreciate any suggestions.
I tried DwgShellEx and I do not think it is what I want. I maybe using
it wrong I am not sure.

Dwgprops can be accessed without opening the file. I use dwgprops to fill out some
of my title block, and then I have a excel file that reads all the info and puts it
into one of the excel pages. Even the Purchasing agent who doesn't have AutoCad on
his machine can refresh the list. I use the acaddbx.dll to access them.

Take a look at DwgBrowser from http://www.dotsoft.com.

Wow Terry pretty cool. DwgBrowser does a lot but of course my client has
multiple users on a novel network.

Thanks Kent.
I hope this is not to "newbie" of me but how do I access a dwg's prop's without opening
it. Also where would I find acaddbx.dll. The dll does not seem to be a standard acad
vba dll.

You can download my version of that program. It's called AcadXprops.
You'll find it in the Downloads section of my site, complete with
source code. Hope this helps.

Sounds like you have it taken care of now, but just to follow up.

I made a typo, sorry. The dll is actually Acaddpx.dll and I find it in Program
Files\Common Files\Autodesk Shared. I am not positive it came with AutoCad, or if it is
from something like the free AutoDesk drawing explorer program.

Anyhow it has the dwgprops and the bitmap preview tools in it. I was once told it was a
more up to date and more supported version than the old dwgpropsx.dll
