Add a "Note" action button which uses "Script Editor" as a non executable colorized "Notepad" for user notes and snippets

A MUCH NEEDED ENHANCEMENT / IMPROVEMENT FOR CODING JAVASCRIPT IN AUTOCONTROL

As a developer, I'm always cutting and pasting code, code snippets, misc notes, etcetera,  into notepad, for current and future use, as I write code in whatever IDE environment that I am currently working in.

I do the same when writing scripts in AutoControl.

ISSUE:

I need an area to act as a notepad for my notes/code within AutoControl, while I write code.

I'VE CREATED A MAKESHIFT COLORIZED NOTEPAD WITHIN AUTOCONTOL (see attached pic below)

Currently, to accomplish this task/feature, I use "Run Script" / Script Editor as a fancy colorized Notepad for my notes that pertain to whatever "Action" box that I am working in.  I don't comment out any of my notes/text, because the colorized text is easy to read, versus text that is commented out.

As you know, this will display many "error / warning" indicator icons because the notes/text are not properly formatted JavaScript code, which is understandable, and is not an issue for me.

To bypass all of the errors, I just place "return;" at the very top of the script, so nothing below that executes, thus leaving me with my desired colorized notes/text for current and future use/reference.

GIVEN THAT:

Could you add a "Note" button to the "Other" submenu, just below the "Run Script" button, that will open a Script Editor or Script Editor type window, for users to create and store their colorized custom notes.

My way works for now, but it's hard to tell which one of my many "Run Script" buttons, actually contain my "notes," and not an actual script.  This problem could easily be eliminated if the button actually says "Note" versus "Run Script."

If the comment's low contrast color is a problem, a solution for that can be to allow the user to customize those colors. Would that be sufficient?

You can also try a different approach: By checking the "External file" checkbox at the top of the script editor, you can edit a script in any external code editor of your choice, that way you can leverage the advanced features of your favorite code editor instead of relying on AutoControl's integrated editor.

Yes, providing the user the ability to customize the colors is an excellent idea.  That would be great.

I will try the "External file" approach also.  Thanks for the suggestion.

As always, thanks for the quick and extremely informative response.

Could an additional solution be to use the "Script" title as the button title instead of just Run Script.

Sounds like a good idea. It's a simple change.
Thanks for suggesting.

Nice "Rightclick."

That is an excellent idea.  That would be a great feature/enhancement that would be of great value to all of the AC community users.

That is much better than my individual “Note” button suggestion, because giving users the ability to define their own “Run Script” button “title,” would be a “game changer” for the better, for all of us.  Thank you for that wonderful suggestion.

Additionally, I saw your suggestions on another one of my post/question, and just wanted to say, “great thoughts,” and I appreciate your input.  I look forward to seeing your future post.  Well done “Rightclick,” well done, and thanks again.  My kind of people.  J

 “AutoControl Support”

It would be great if you could implement “Rightclick’s” “Run Script” custom “titling” suggestion.  Wow, what a great “game changer” that would be.

That would allow me to stick with using my current “fancy” Notepad via “Script Editor” method, and also, be able to easily identify who is who, and what is what, “Run Script” button wise, in each “Action” box.  Nice.

The main reason I will stick with the “fancy” colorized Notepad using “Script Editor,” is because it already has the “built-in” error checking and identification, which is invaluable, even for simple things such as “notes,” that may or may not contain JavaScript code.

If you do implement the “titling” feature, I would appreciate it if you could notify us as soon as that feature is operational and ready for use, if possible.  That would be great.

Thanks in advance

The script name will be shown in the action name in the next update later this month.
