The front brake pads of a 2nd generation (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012) Ford Escape tend to last anywhere from about 40,000 to over 80,000 miles depending on your driving style and conditions. If you'd like to change the front pads on your Escape yourself to save some money, check out my complete DIY instructions page at the link below.

Here's the DIY guide - http://www.paulstravelpictures.com/Ford-Escape-Front-Brake-Pads-Replacement-Guide/index.html

The steps should the same or similar for the related Mercury Mariner and the Mazda Tribute SUVs.

Hi,

You should start to hear a slight screeching or squealing sound when your brake pads are almost worn out.

There is a wear bar or "squeal" bar that begins to touch the rotor when the pad material is nearly worn away.

You can also look at the caliper through the wheel and see how much pad material is left.

But the car won't have any sort of signal light for when the brakes are worn out like it does for low oil or low gas.
