My '90 Proron Saga https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proton_Saga_(first_generation) 's
i) 1st mechanical fuel pump already could not work in 1998, 2nd pump's diaphragm inside broke in 2013 : petrol came out through this pump's ventilation pipe & onto components below, because its diaphragm ( like 1st pump's ) hardened & cracked. Shops have no silicone rubber gaskets for fitting this pump onto engine, I had to cut 2 gaskets out of an organic rubber sheet : after 2½ yr use, these 2 gaskets hardened & broke, oil leaked out, engine can stall if oil pressure is too low.
ii) 1st rubber hose between fuel intake pipe ( below filler cap ) & tank hardened & cracked by 2012 : petrol leaked onto station's forecourt below this hose. In these 2 cases abovesaid, leaked petrol would be ignited, if a spark or hot ash touched these petrol or their fumes.
iii) 1 rubber seal in 1 brake pump ( inside a drum brake ) bought & fitted in 2008 ( 1st pump has leaked, in 2008 ) hardened & cracked by 2016 : brakc fluid leaked out so pump was less effective in pushing 2 shoes outward toward drum.
iv) 1st master brake pump could not pump well, by 2003 : likely rubber seals inside hardened.
v) 1st pair of wiper rubber hardened by 1993 : could not wipe well.
vi) 1st steering rack's rubber seals inside had hardened & leaked fluid by 2000, 2nd rack too by 2014, because heat in fluid from engine's hydraulic pump hardened the rubber seals inside rack. Steering will require high strength ( unfound in most drivers ), if rack looses fluid pressure entirely.
vii) CV joints' rubber covers harden & break every 8 to 10 year, then sand enters CV joints which then wear fast & make noise.
viii) radiator cap's 1st rubber gasket hardened & cracked, by 2000 : engine can overheat if enough coolant leaks out.
My '90 Honda Accord has similar problems as (iv) to (vii) above, & 3 of its Denso aircon's o-rings hardened & leaked refridgerant, by 2014.
Unlike organic rubber, silicone rubber cannot harden / crack, & is cheap : e.g. a 75 g tube made in Johor is retailed @ M$ 6.50 on Pg island, yet car makers ( none specifies usage of silicone rubber for any model's seals / gaskets / o-rings / hoses ) don't want to use
silicone rubber because car makers don't want their cars to be used for more than 5 year : car makers want users to buy new cars.
Likely the same preference exists in helicopters' makers, so helicopter crashes recur.
Governments should demand parts & vehicle makers use silicone rubber, for brake / steering / fuel line & pump / wiper rubber / radiator cap & hoses / aircon, to maximise transport safety.
