Escape key or click outside to close a modal

Looking for direction for how to get past a modal that sometimes interrupts the page that has a button I'm trying to click.

I have tried KeyboardEvents::Escape and KeyboardEvents::Esc which don't seem to work

My extended attempts at using Key Events have also not worked and I am not really sure what page element to target and it if would even work using that function (KeyEvent).

I would also be OK with a string of mouse events that click anywhere else on the page except for the area within the main modal content area since that action would also dismiss the modal but I haven't been able to accomplish that either since it seems it may be impossible to negative target the modal or even something as simple as a random click within a defined x/y.

IF there is close button or icon on modal popup you can try to click that element.
