Children, Grief & Self Esteem (Presenter, Cherene Wessels)
A One Day Workshop for People Working with & Caring for Children &
Adolescents
Many children suffer loss in one form or another, and many of their
behaviours are a result of traumatic changes in their lives.
Identifying these behaviours is an essential part of our positions as
teachers, carers and parents.
This workshop will provide individuals with the necessary skills to
assist children who have experienced trauma due to crisis situations
such as parents’ separating or divorcing, parents’ loss of employment,
individual relationship breakdowns, bullying, changing schools,
harassment, death loss, abuse etc.
AIMS:
• To provide participants with strategies to help build self esteem in
children, their parents and self To demonstrate the value of having a
good self esteem – Helping to break the “cycle” of verbal and
emotional abuse. (Hurt Children – Hurt Children!)
• To give strategies to help improve social skills in children from
all walks of life or children with additional needs.
• To look at issues that may complicate and accentuate a wide variety
of emotions and negative behaviour.
CONTENT:
• Identifying Loss & Grief Reactions in Children
Identifying crisis situations that arise which may complicate and
accentuate a wide variety of emotions eg. parents’ separating or
divorcing, parents’ loss of job, relationship breakdown, changing
schools, bullying and harassment, burglary, abuse, death loss, etc.
Developing strategies to help children deal with these issues.
• How to Help the Grieving Child & their families
Being aware of the process that hurting people may go through and how
to help.
Being aware of the gender differences and acknowledging the
characteristics of the various age groups experiencing grief. Knowing
what to say and what not to say.
• Recognising Additional Needs, Environmental Issues, etc
Giving strategies to help children with additional needs feel
comfortable with themselves as individuals.
• Looking at Characteristics of Children with Low Self Esteem
Looking at why children think, feel and behave the way they do and how
it affects their self esteem.
• Encouraging Appropriate Behaviour / Eliminating Discounting and “Put
Downs”
Bullying – Identifying where it comes and from gaining strategies to
prevent it. Understanding the importance of developing a positive self
esteem and breaking the “cycle” of verbal and emotional abuse.
• Self Talk & Mental Attitudinal Reprogramming
Assisting children & others to develop a healthy identity through the
choices they make. Helping them to tap into their full potential by
learning to live a complete and balanced life.
• Teaching Empathy in Children and ways to Maintain Friendships
Encouraging children to be aware of how others are feeling. Equipping
children with skills to communicate openly, honestly and confidently.
