Hi there!

I was just wondering if there is anyone who could please recommend a
paediatrician in the brisbane area who could give me a proper
diagnosis for Autisim...My 3 Y.O daughter displays many of the
symptoms and I have been told that not all paediatricians can
properley diagnose this.

thanks so much!

Kate,

You will need to find a "developmental" Paediatrician and the test that
they will most likely do is called the ADOS test.
The child development network at the Mater Hospital on the south side of
Brisbane is excellent.
Good luck with it - early diagnosis is the key and you are quite right in
that you need to see a paed equipped to diagnose correctly.

Kind Regards Sarah CM

Hi there!

thanks so much!
Kate

Dear Kate, Welcome. Sorry I'm outside of the Brisbane area and cannot
give you an exact name. But from my experience (have two children on
the spectrum) it's best to see a hospital that has allied health
professionals. For example, a multi-disciplinary team of health
professionals (occupational therapist, speech therapist, behaviour
nurse, etc.) supply supporting information to the Paediatrician in
case management meetings and eventually a diagnosis is made. Our
eldest son clearly had classic Autism and was non-verbal, has an
intellectual impairment. And our youngest son after five months of
speech therapy at the hospital, seeing the Paed etc. and endless
behaviour problems, was diagnosed as having High Functioning Autism,
Attention Deficit Disorder and Global Development Delay.

Can you see your GP and ask for a referral? What about the Royal
Children's Hospital at Herston in Brisbane?

Hope this is a bit clearer for you.
Best wishes.

Hi Kate,

Depending on where in Brisbane you live will kind of depend on the paed to see. After a year of weekly private speech therapy, my speech pathologist got my son in to see Dr Tony Leslie at the Mater. My opinion only, but do whatever you need to do to see him. In a past life I was studying to be a special education teacher, in many of my texts, according to my colleagues and most of the professionals I ask recommend him. From what I am told, he is the best of the best. I find out for myself tomorrow. My boy's got the first of his 4 rounds with him. On a different note, if you do get referred to a different paed, don't accept being told "she has delays". This disorder is best attacked EARLY. If they think you're Dr shopping, f#$! them, who cares what they think. You're simply doing what every parent does; what is best for their child. Pity help the next person who tries to stand in my way of me trying to help my boy.

Best of Luck!!!

Mathew,

You do seem to have to be “plucky” about this  journey the entire way. That’s entirely the right idea!

Well done. Good Advice. Push on !

OK.
After having seen Dr Leslie yesterday, I can now say first hand, he is definitely worth the wait! I was prepared to pay a fair amount of money to see him, but he bulk billed us. I nearly fell over!. What?! Someone is actually doing something to help us?? Not only did he bulk bill us, he very clearly mapped out instructions as to where to go from here. He put us in touch with anyone who may be even remotely able to help us, he even grabbed some guy from centrelink as he was walking past and said here, you need to see these people, they're entitled to this, this and this. So now I finally have my diagnosis. Obviously I'm not as thrilled to hear it is definitely Autism (severity unsure, we'll have to wait for a few more tests) as I would have been if I was told "Golly Man, what's wrong with you, it's all in your head, he's a perfect little boy!" However, in light of that, it now opens a lot more doors and we're now able to help him a lot more effectively now we have a dx. On a different note again, last night will live for a very long time in my memory. My son is by and large; non-verbal. Through constant hard work (nearly 18 months of it), he did something lst night he does quite alot. He woke up in tears, opened his door and started to head towards our bedroom. I was awake and watching TV, I intercepted him and walked him back to bed, asked him what was wrong. I got a whole mouthful of garble, and I heard the word 'cup'. I asked him "Do you want your cup?" "Ussss" (loosely translated into 'yes') I got him a cold drink of water, he finished, handed the cup back to me "nigh night beet" (loosly translated to 'goodnight dad'). I thought that was just splendid. (Swimming at the pool is interesting, "BEET! HOWP!!!" at the top of his little lungs (Dad, Help!) He also does the cutest version of "open, shut them".

Anyway, that was all a very roundabout way of saying, yes, being plucky isn't necessarily a bad attribute to adopt, especially when what you have is worth fighting tooth and nail for. There's enough people who don't want to help in this world, I just try to think that if they're not part of the solution, they're part of the problem.

Hi Kate

Sorry for the late response. You have probably made your appointment
by now but in case you haven't,I would also recommend Tony Leslie at
the Mater although I haven't seen him. I took my son to see Catherine
Skellern at the Child Development Network, also at the Mater. Minds
and Hearts at West End have psychologists who can both diagnose and
help with dealing with ASD but I think it is better to have the
diagnosis from a paediatrician and use the others for advice, learning
programs etc. Good Luck. Hope this has helped. Jane (Penola12).
