Are you wishing you'd arranged for an author to be part of your Family Literacy Event?  
 
It's not too late!!!
 
Following our regular news section, we are pleased to provide a complete list of members who have availability for events during Family Literacy Week.  Each person has included details of his or her available dates, cost and travel particulars.  We hope this will assist those of you who still wish to book an author or illustrator for your event this year.

Welcome Loris Lesynski!

Our list is growing! We are pleased to announce that poet and artist, Loris Lesynski has joined Authors Booking Service. Currently, Loris working on a book of soccer poems, several pages of which will feature selected poems written by actual children. To read more about Loris, go here.

NHL Hall of Famer Bryan Trottier teams up with Sigmund Brouwer!
During select dates in February and March, NHL Hall of Famer Bryan Trottier will be available for special literacy presentations with Sigmund Brouwer. (Audience: entire school assembly. Length: one hour. Format: literacy talk by Sigmund Brouwer, followed by motivational talk by Bryan.) 

Bryan won six Stanley Cups as a player and a seventh Stanley Cup as a coach, and is known as one of the best 'all-around' players in the history of the NHL. Teachers and students will be blown away by the motivational talk and the video of hockey highlights. Bryan welcomes all parents to be involved too. The fee is $1000; it is a unique and limited opportunity to tie in with Bryan Trottier's hockey exhibition tour in the following cities on the following dates. Because of this tie-in, there are no additional travel expenses.

Silver Birch Express nominee Chad Solomon has two new puppet programs:
Puppets: Rabbit and Bear Paws – The Way. Students become puppeteers in what is sure to be a comical retelling of how Turtle Island (North America) was created. Recommended for daycare - Grade 4, presentation length: 40 min, Cost $250.00

Bullying and puppets: Rabbit and Bear Paws. Students become puppeteers to discover how to resolve bullying with restorative justice. Recommended for Grades 1- 3, Presentation length: 45 min, Cost $250.00
 

S is for Scientists: A Discovery Alphabet, the latest release from 2010 Silver Birch winner Larry Verstraete, has been selected as an Outstanding Science Trade Book for 2011 by the U.S. National Science Teacher’s Association and Children’s Book Council.   Called “a terrific introduction for children into science” by one reviewer, the book celebrates the breakthroughs and diverse methods of science.  Larry is available for school visits around the time of the OLA Superconference.

 

Life Above All (based on Allan Stratton's Chanda's Secrets) has been named to the National Board of Review (U.S.A.) top five Best Foreign Language Films list.

Sigmund Brouwer will be in Ontario for school and library presentations January 25 – 29, 2011.

Winnipegger Larry Verstraete, winner of the 2010 Silver Birch Award for At the Edge: Daring Acts in Desperate Times, will be visiting Toronto area schools on February 1st  & 2nd . From cliff-hanging true stories to the steps he uses to create award-winning non-fiction, Larry’s sessions involve students in the thrills and challenges of writing his favourite genre. He’ll also take students behind the scenes of his latest release, S is for Scientists: A Discovery Alphabet, a book that has been selected as an Outstanding Science Trade Book for 2011 by the National Science Teacher’s Association and Children’s Book Council.  To book Larry for your school, please contact Author’s Booking.

 

Pam Bustin will be in the GTA for the OLA Super Conference and has availability for school and library visits on February 2, 4 and 5.

Philip Roy (Submarine Outlaw) is available for visits in the GTA, Hamilton and Oakville area in April 2011.


Métis children's and YA novelist Jacqueline Guest will be in Toronto at the end of April 2011 and is available for visits at that time.

 

Arthur Slade has availability downtown Toronto on the morning of May 11.
