Found this in the NYT. Interesting that a US citizen was demonstrating
a private radio service for the Italians, who as it turned out were
the enemy at the beginning of World War II.

ROME, Oct. 7. -- Premier Mussolini today received John Hays Hammond
Jr. who presented to him a five-kilowatt broadcasting outfit of the
selective wave or "narrowcasting" type. This apparatus, which will be
set up in the vicinity of Rome, will be used for experimental purposes
and, if found successful may become the nucleus of the new radio
service for Government purposes which it is proposed to install in
