Peace Alliance members, Please see below for a message from the trip leaders for the winter Alternative Break trip to Cape Town, South Africa....
Join us this winter break in Cape Town, South Africa! Experience a vibrant new culture while serving people with some of the greatest needs of our time and learning from a variety of experts. From December 26 – January 9 be a part of an Alternative Break trip themed “Examining the Rights of the HIV+ and At-Risk Populations.”
HIV/AIDS affects almost 6 million people in South Africa – that’s 12% of the nation’s population! As a participant on this trip you will have the opportunity to learn and discuss the social justice issues surrounding those most affected. Through service projects at HIV clinics and conversations with a variety of community leaders, such as researchers at the University of Cape Town, you will be able to see the affects first hand and begin to talk about solutions. You will also meet with organizations that are advocating for the rights of HIV+ individuals and take a look at how the issues are already being addressed at the grassroots level. In addition, you will have the opportunity to learn about South Africa’s complex social history during pre-trip trainings and through on-ground activities such as visiting Robben Island and touring the Khayelitsha township.
