Hi Ellen Hogan,

The Victoria State Election can be considered 'Judgement Day' in respect to VICTORIAN WATER POLICY

PTP is an agri-environmental group of >3000 people who enjoys the support of 100,000's Australians.

The North South Pipeline is a Key election issue.

The PLUG THE PIPE executive makes the following recomemmdations for 2010 Victoria State Election and based on the facts.

PLUGGER

Victorian State Election 2010

Key Issues

Agriculture

The Foodbowl Modernisation Project removes at least 100 billion litres of water  (stage one alone)  from irrigators in the first instance through meter error. GMW excutives believe this is wrong an so do we. In stage two similar amounts of water will be removed from irrigators through metering changes.

The Foodbowl Modernisation Project removes significant water from drainage diverters of the Goulburn Valley.

The privatisation of 60% of the current irrigation system is unacceptable and will lead to the contraction of food production in Victoria.

Environment

100% of water supplied and allocated to the North South Pipeline is environmental water this year.

The water savings projects listed in the Foodbowl Modernisation Project will permantely remove substaintial amounts of water from the Murray Darling Basin.

Melbourne

Melbourne does not need the water. Currently the dam that the North South Pipeline supplies is 100% FULL.

There are other more sustainable options available for Melbourne. Eventally the fast growing Melbourne will be forced to recycle water and capture storm water. The North South Pipeline just removes precious water from the  Murray Darling Basin which is in oposition to the Commonwealth Basin Plan.

The Judgement

Given the Brumby Governments total mis-management of water during a time of extreme hardship for the Environment, Irrigators and the People of Melbourne Plug the Pipe recommends:-

Choose your number one prefernce from the Coalition, DLP, Independent, Family First or Greens and preference LABOR LAST.

The BRUMBY LABOR Government deserves to be removed from Government on water issues alone.

In respect to the Electorates of SEYMOUR and MILDURA we recommend voters preference JAN BEER (Independent) and Peter Crisp (Nationals) respectively because of their positive comittement to Victorian Water Policy and environmental commitment (ie Opposition to the Mildura Toxic Waste Dump and the North South Pipeline). These people do try to PROTECT THE FUTURE OF COUNTRY COMMUNITIES from both an environmental and agricultural persective.

Plug the Pipe Executive

Letters From Prominent Plug the Pipers

Chris Harrison

The Pipeline Ends in Seymour

When the people of Victoria cast their votes on November 27th many will be considering the Brumby Government’s decision to build the North South Pipeline. At a cost of $1 billion, but adding no more than 1% to Melbourne’s dams it is one of the State’s most wasteful projects-only eclipsed by the Desal and Myki money pits.

The pipeline’s pumps have been silent for over a month because there is no where for the water to go. The Sugarloaf Reservoir is full. Victorians will pay for this waste in their water bills for years to come.   The ‘ouch’ factor will continue and will be an on going reminder of the Brumby Government’s failed WATER PLAN.

The Government’s decision to build the North South Pipeline and extract water from the Murray Darling Basin at the peak of the drought could not have come at a worse time for our food producers and inland rivers. The opposition spawned by this decision has been so overwhelming that you have to question the Government’s connection with ordinary Victorians.

At a political level, every non-labor political party has been opposed to the North South Pipeline; a truly extraordinary occurrence in Victorian politics.  Nearly a year after its construction, people all over the State are still angry ensuring this pipeline remains a key election issue.

The Brumby Government has labeled Plug the Pipe a political group but its origins come from the Government’s own failure to engage with the community. When a government squashes debate, hides the truth and demonises its opposition people have no other choice but to form politically active lobby groups.

The Brumby Government wields its power isolated from the community and protected by an 800 strong media unit. This reality has spawned political candidates from a range of groups including Desal protestor Neil Rankin and Plug the Pipe’s environmental spokeswoman, Jan Beer. These people are not innately political but have been affected by Labor’s politics. In a sense they have been forced to take a political stand.

The Seymour Electorate is where the North South Pipeline starts and ends. It is also the electorate Jan Beer is contesting. The pipeline will be the bitter focus of the campaign in this electorate.

Both Jan Beer and Labor have preferenced each other last, indicating a depth of passion on both sides. Plug the Pipe, which has significant membership within the electorate will also recommend that people vote for a candidate from the Coalition, DLP, Family First , Greens or Independents and preference Labor Last.

Thankfully that’s democracy.

Mary Chandler of Mildura

Peter Deserves to be Re-elected

The ‘Grubby tactics’ claim against Peter Crisp in last Monday’s paper is yet another salvo fired in what has turned into a “dirty tricks” campaign orchestrated against him by the so-called independents Doug Tonge and Glenn Milne and the Labor party.

It is obvious that there is a conspiracy to unseat Peter Crisp and a concerted campaign has been orchestrated with false misinformation and innuendos against his work ethics, his character and his support of issues such as the return of the passenger train to Mildura.   I find it sad and I am very angry that that tactics used to besmirch him as a person and to belittle all the hard work he has done over the past four years because unlike some people, he has never pushed his own barrel, will be believed by those who do not know him, and are unaware of what he has achieved in spite of the fact that he is in the Opposition currently.     He has debated vigorously on a large number of issues in parliament (he apparently holds the honour of giving the most speeches in parliament) and no doubt if the coalition win government, he will be listened to by his colleagues and rural Victoria will be a winner.

I am listing a few of his achievements and views covering a wide range of issues:

Environment - Peter led the fight against the Toxic Waste Dump.   He followed this up by fighting against a proposal for control burning of the Nowingi Site at a Hearing in Ouyen.   Thank goodness this was stopped and the many very valuable rare and endangered species have survived for the time being. He is a proponent for Natural Gas and the need for it. He has been a strong advocate for Solar Energy in Sunraysia as well as supporting the Bio Fuel industry for the Mallee. He maintained a strong position in opposing the North-South Pipeline. Worked hard on irrigation and all water issues pertaining to the Mallee.

Rail issues: He has always supported the return of the Mildura Passenger train and to this end established an action group to work for this.He has supported the expansion of the Austlink site and the upgrade of the rail line from Ouyen to Murrayville. He has supported the standardization of rail.

Health: Peter has worked hard on recurrent Mildura base Hospital recurrent funding issues. Been involved with helping Hopetoun health service delivery RNWH. Stood up for disabled advocacy in Mildura to get a permanent presence in Mildura.During the recontracting of our air-ambulance service, he fought hard for local Mallee communities, ensuring the continuation of services to Ouyen and Robinvale.

Education: Stood up and helped familes over the changes to the youth allowance. He has helped and supported the need to finding solutions for our low transition to secondary and higher education. He has supported the Trade Training Centre application and the expansion of University Course in Mildura

Local issues: He has always stated he holds the view that the Mallee should be a stand along region.  He has helped and supported many individuals and groups in numerous fund raising events

It is sad that the main issue that is the focus of the election is that of the proposed Casino for Mildura instead of water, health, law and order, education and the return of the passenger train to Mildura to name a few..

I can see the mischievous hand of John Brumby and the Labor party in this smear campaign.   And it would seem that a vote for the Casino is a vote for Labor, a party that has deprived Sunraysia of its irrigation water, has built the controversial north-south pipeline to take water from irrigators for the people of Melbourne, the Goldfields pipeline which is also dipping into water from the Murray Darling Basin for the people of Ballarat and Geelong and all the towns and cities in between.

The Casino issue is deflecting people’s concentrating from issues they should be concentrating on and anyone who stands up against the Casino, including Peter Crisp, is branded as negative, anti-progress and as the dramatic headline in Sunraysia Daily Tuesday November 23, 2010 stated “Jewel report ‘s stunt: Tonge slams study which claims casino proposal an impossible dream.”

I wonder what he will have to say against the report on Crown Casino when 225 staff members were surveyed. This was raised by Tim Costello on Tuesday.    The report did not show up Crown Casino is a very good light and it gives food for thought of what a Casino in Mildura could be like.

Then there’s Glenn Milne’s confusing stance on the Casino with a heading in Wednesday November 24, 2010 stating “Milne set to sue Nats   - Independent claims ad misrepresents his view on the casino.”

What is your view really Glenn?   I too am confused.   I note in Sunraysia daily it states “Cr. Knight, Cr. Glenn Milne and Cr Judi Harris opposed the (casino) motion, while Cr. Nick Cavallo and Cr. John Arnold were unable to vote after declaring conflicts of interest.   Friday May 28th – Sunraysia Daily”

And in the article it quotes “Mr Milne said he had long advocated for a convention centre in Mildura, but never committee publicly to a casino.

He said claims to the contrary were “simply false”.

“You show me a statement where I have supported the casino,”, a fired up former mayor said…………

“If by swapping preferences with another independent infers I am supporting a casino, they are mistaken.”

Well Glenn, in my reading if you are giving your first preferences to Doug Tonge who is running on the pro-casino issue, then you are giving your support to a casino for Mildura whether you like it or not.

I ask everyone to think long and hard before you vote on Saturday.   Peter Crisp is a person of the highest integrity who really cares and has worked extremely hard on a huge number of issues pertaining to this area. People should vote for whom they believe in, but they should not vote someone in for the wrong reasons, eg for thinking that the information contained in the attacks and smear campaign against Peter Crisp are true - they are not.    Peter has been described as a “good bloke”   and we have been lucky to have him as a parliamentary representative over the last four years.

>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>

Hi Rosemary

Ellen can say what she wishes - in her own right.
Brigid Walsh does - on her own forum.
I do so too, on my Blog.
You may do so too.

But I objected to Ellen using her membership of a public forum to push a specifically partisan barrow which could potentially bring the entire forum into disrepute.
Such guidelines were established in the earliest times - and not just by me.

I would take the same stance with anyone abusing the forum in favour of any party.

Cheers

I too support Rosemary and Ellen. I am a member of Plug the pipe and we are
not radicals, (I have over 100mgs of water and we irrigate and we have also
freely given over 200mgs to the environment when we had extra and I am doing
a Master of Environmental Law thru ANU and I respect my environment) but
trying to stop a pipeline taking water from the MDB to a city of 4 million
(predicted to be 7 million plus) that has other unexplored options. Any
water "savings" should be left in the river for the environment and
irrigators to share. Or the 75GL could be considered as part of Victoria's
portion of what it is required to find for the Basin Plan' cap. As always in
a group which is fighting for the environment and ecological sustainability
you will get people with many reasons for their wish to stop a project. They
band together as we have against the pipeline and this is a good thing
because we educate each other this way. We have learnt heaps about DEWHA
(old name) and have built friendships based on a common goal. Sort of like
when we fought against the toxic waste dump up near Mildura and the
Wonthaggi desal plant near Powlett Inlet. We are not hiding behind anything,
we are who we are: a nice bunch of people banded together supporting each
other against inappropriate water projects (and others) that will have
cumulative impacts that have not been assessed because of Victoria's
pathetic EE Act and other policies and laws, that put the environment and
public participation in decision-making last. By changing government we have
an opportunity to start again and looking at the other side's water policies
I think they are better, not that they can be trusted either. Elections are
our only chance of changing the state of affairs as they now stand. As you
all do with your coal seam extractions and other nasty projects that are
proposed; you lobby government and you change government. We do not have a
hidden agenda.

Cheers
Maria
Ps I like hearing other people's views too.

Hi Maria

Your posts have always been balanced.
There is no problem there.

I referred to Jan Beer as standing as an Independent to distinguish her from the views expressed - not to paste her as a radical.
Far from it.

I certainly was not criticising Jan.
Jan is accountable for her own opinions. Fine. Congratulations to her for taking a stand.
I was letting people know she is standing, so they can support her, if they choose.
There will be other water campaigners who will be supporting Jan on Saturday, too.
She has done the work, she has credibility.

Cheers

Thanks Denis. I admire Jan immensely and her determination to never give up –even though that pipeline has been built. We have already a commitment that it will not be used (unless dire straits) by the Coalition. I also brought up the matter at the 3 MDBA meetings I attended, firmly pointing to the gigantic error on page 15 of the Basin Guide-where they state that Adelaide is the largest city outside the basin utilising its waters and saying it is 1.3 million total outside the Basin—it is over 5 million when adding in Melbourne, Geelong and Ballarat and other towns now connected. I don’t believe that they know the exact figure and they and WE, NEED to know this, and I will be putting this in my submission; as the Goulburn is the most degraded river in the MDB (as is the Murrumbidgee). We now need those that will be in government in Victoria, to sell this water (or give it back, all 75GL) to the environment-this would lessen what is needed to be regained from irrigators. A case of equity.

Thanks again

Maria

Hi Maria

I agree entirely about your points about the MDB waters being syphoned off to Melbourne, and not being accountable.

My original point was that "uperficial characterisations of the entire North-south pipeline as some kind of urban socialist conspiracy against the honest clean-living country folk" (my words, not theirs, but that's how it comes across) will get nobody anywhere.

Fight environmental vandalism on the facts - as you have done.

Cheers

I too support Ellen, and absolutely agree with what Maria and Rosemary were
saying. Surely the point of being an "a-political forum", as Denis said, is
that ALL political viewpoints can be aired? And if one political party is
supporting your particular cause, surely just by posting their views on this
forum, it will not suddenly change other members' political leanings??
therefore why would it matter?
I know very little about the Plug the Pipe, but I think it is terrible to be
taking water from the MDB to Melbourne city.
And how could they be "hiding behind a veneer of rational commentary" or
whatever it was - she just openly posted a viewpoint? Freedom of speech.
And I thought that's what politics is all about - lobbying until one of the
political parties fixes the situation you are concerned about?
I like hearing all the different viewpoints too.
Anne
