Hi everyone,

we have some exciting initiatives to announce coming up under the QGIS Australia banner this year.

QGIS Australia was formed in 2012 with a mission to engage, support, and grow the QGIS community throughout the country. This has taken various forms over the years including maintaining the Google Group mailing list where users can post and answer questions. Members of the QGIS community have also been engaged with organising conferences such as the recent FOSS4G Oceania conference in Hobart 2024 and the International FOSS4G conference in Auckland 2025, as well as local meetups under various umbrellas.

Recently a small group of the willing, referred to as ‘coordinators’, have begun planning activities for 2026. The group consists of Emma Hain, Grant Boxer, John Bryant and Colin Mazengarb but we welcome any others who wish to belong, share their ideas and spread the load.

As our primary initiative for 2026, a webinar series is being organised with the first kicking off on April 30. The format will be approximately 45 minutes duration, consisting of two ~15 minute presentations and allowing time for questions after each. An advertisement will be sent out shortly that will outline the content, so stay tuned and as always check the QGIS website for details. In addition, we will post details of the event on the group’s LinkedIn page so be sure to ‘like’ the event when you read it to ensure the message is broadened into your network. The webinar will be live-streamed on YouTube and recorded for those who miss it. As with any technology we are beginners in hosting such an event so if you have the skills and want to help us moderate the meeting be sure to make contact.

Finally, if you have any topics you are interested in learning about or are open to being a presenter at a future webinar, please let us know. As examples, would you be interested in:

  • ·         Discovering data sources in Australia (and beyond)
  • ·         Virtual fields in QGIS: what can you do with them?

Look forward to catching up soon,

Em, John, Grant and Colin
