Hi, I’m Karen.

I’m fairly new to GIS and have been learning through the free online tutorials while mapping out my home garden in QGIS. It’s been interesting to notice how many of the apps I use daily draw on geographical data.

I’m interested in understanding how geographical data is collected, managed and used across different systems. Looking forward to being part of the group.

Hi Karen

Welcome to the QGIS Australia Users group!

We have an upcoming Webinar where Grant Boxer will present on the Geology Plugins for QGIS.
There is plugin called  'AusMap' that may be helpful to build on those you already have (if you don't already have it).

Cheers
Em

Welcome Karen,

I have just installed AusMap plugin and some data sets don’t upload for some reason but others do.

Cheers

Hi Karen,

Welcome to the group. Your question is a huge one to answer and I think I should add a little to Em's contribution.

Briefly: Data is collected in Australia mainly by the various levels of government entities using a range of imagery and data collection strategies. There is also the Open Street Map community that maps for free and which various proprietary companies use for navigation (rather than mapping themselves). Plus utility organisations, various satellite imagery (free ones: Bing, ESRI, Google), etc, etc.

Em mentioned the Ausmap plugin but there are other plugins containing data sources you could also use by searching the plugin repository using Australia or a State name as a keyword.

As you get more familiar with QGIS, establishing direct connections to web map servers (such as ArcGIS Rest) will allow you to access data not available via plugins.

We actually need to run a webinar on this subject as it is not obvious to many where this data resides, how to access it and how to view it.

Good luck with your QGIS journey and hopefully you will join a local community meetup to expand your network. I know we have at least one keen landscape gardener in this group so hopefully she will make contact.

Regards
Colin

Hi Colin,

I’d like to second the motion to have a webinar on server resources, or an index of some kind. That would be mighty useful and save quite a bit of sleuthing around.

Also, welcome Karen, and thanks user group for being an example of a supportive online community!

Reuben
