Hi all,

Im currently doing a uni project on NSW survey marks. Trying to put a background image on the survey marks that i have imported into qgis.
All my survey marks are on GDA2020 (See photo)
My local government area map shape file that i have downloaded from the internet wont import into the correct coordinate system (see photo).
Im currently using WGS 84, i have tried using the GDA2020 system but it warps the map.
Can anyone help me.

Hi Nelson,

Somethings definitely off there.

I think your survey marks may well be in GDA2020 but the dataset has somehow been assigned the WGS84 CRS. I think that because in the image below # 1 shows that your coordinates are in the range of a projected MGA coords, and #2 shows that your project is currently in WGS84 which we would expect to be showing lat/lons.

Can you tell us a bit more about how you came up with your survey layers?

Yes, a bit hard to diagnose, but try setting the layer to EPSG:7844
I think I have seen a few times that GDA2020 is shown, but not properly adopted.

Have to admit I am not an expert on transformations, just trying to do something else just now and got a new one

That's a good suggestion Bill, it might just be a case of assigning the correct projection to the layers.

I think in your case that projection would be EPSG:7856 based on the coordinate space that was shown in QGIS, and the local government area you're in.

If you can share the process you used to create the survey layers, we might be able to shed some light on how you ended up in that position.
