QGIS Pro Tips for Beginners Presentation

Hi All

In the upcoming FOSS4G SotM Oceania conference in Auckland, I am giving a lightning talk on what the pro tips for beginners would be.

I want to talk about the gift economy here (is that the right term?). I want to identify some actions as like a kudos/karma action - but I want a catchy name for it. The definition of the action is to give back to the project so that it is sustainable and grows. The actions include:

• Reporting bugs
• Feature requests
• Using the nightly release to test it
• Helping to run the community
• Core developer
• Documentation
• Fund
  
• Attending events - FOSS4G, QGIS User Groups, QGIS Conferences
  
• Any others?
  

I would love your help with a terminology here.

Also - if you have any tips you think should be included, please send them through.

Another thing you could add to your list: sharing your stories. We're always looking for interesting stories for our Geogeeks meetups, and you don't have to be an old hand to have an interesting perspective.

Hello Emma,

That looks like a great talk, it's really nice that you had the initiative to put it together and go and present. 

From what I've seen, many questions from newbies are related to GIS as science, rather than being software specific.  Those are questions related to projections, vector vs raster, file types (int, real, text, etc), scale and surveying issues, etc. I think for new people it would be great to remind them that many tasks are simple to do in QGIS, but more advanced tasks sometimes rely on a good understanding of the theory behind it all.  And that's maybe a good way to help others understand what sets GIS professionals apart from simple users. If it all had to be condensed in a bullet point, it would be something along the lines of "understanding general GIS theory (projections, data types, file formats, etc) will help you loads!".
