Self-Introduction of Liu Zhao, University of Tasmania, Fire Centre

Hi All,

My name is Liu Zhao, and I am a new PhD student at the University of Tasmania’s Fire Centre, based in Hobart, focusing on wildfire remote sensing.

I first started using QGIS during my undergraduate studies back in 2018, when most of my lecturers were still teaching with ArcGIS 10.3. I was immediately drawn to the flexibility and openness of QGIS, although I must admit it sometimes cost me a few marks when submitting assignments! Later, during my postgraduate studies, I continued to explore GIS tools. While ArcGIS Pro is undeniably powerful, I found myself consistently returning to QGIS for its adaptability, particularly for cartography. Over time, I also experimented with building a few toy applications and plugins using PyQt and QGIS—although those projects never quite made it beyond the experimental stage.

It is a real pleasure to be part of the QGIS Australia User Group, and I look forward to learning from and contributing to this community.

Welcome Liu!

I used to teach geography at UTAS and we used QGIS in first year units for studying natural environments and conservation.

I live and work in Liffey in the north of Tasmania.

We just had a QGIS Users Group catchup in Hobart last Friday night. Don't worry, there will be another one soon :)
