Hi all,
I am trying to fix up a legend in QGIS within a layout. I need to add sub-headings and cannot find a way to do this.  I have re-ordered my legend items and found I can create a sub heading by right clicking on the item I want the sub heading to be above, and ticking sub-group.  Unfortunately this just uses the item text as the sub heading and I cannot find a way to edit it independantly. When I edit the item I only get the option to edit the item text which changes both the item and sub group text. I have also been trying to find a way of converting the legend to a graphic, then ungrouping and editing that way (as I do in ArcGIS). Does anyone have any tips/tricks? I would be very appreciative! Lisa

Sub-group headings in bold need to be edited independantly of item name.
Eg. Future Residential needs to 'Community'

Hi Lisa,

Yeah I see what you mean, if I turn on Group or Sub-Group it inherits the symbol-label.

The only way I know to get around that, is to group the layers in the main map into the groups you want. Then the grouped layers will come through to the legend where you can modify the group name again to be a "Group", "SubGroup" or "Hidden" if you need to.

Hope this helps.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for your idea and detailed screenshots.

Unfortunately this won’t work for me as this would change the layer order and mean some point and line symbols would end up below polygons.

I was hoping I didn’t have to completely reinvent the legend, but looks like that’s the case!

I have now thought I can add 4 different legends to my layout and edit each one to contain only the layers I want, then use the title as the group heading.

A bit of a work around, but all I can think of at this point!

If anyone finds a better way, please let me know.

Lisa

Oh cool, yeah that works!

Also what about adding just a group in the legend? I believe this adds an empty group that you can drag legend items into and doesn't require changing layer order in the map. Apologies with my first suggestion it was a bit long-winded.

Hi Andrew,

That is fantastic! Exactly what I was looking for.

I added an empty group to the legend, then dragged and dropped the required items into the group, then edited the group name.

I had been clicking the add group button before and not realising it was adding empty groups down the bottom of my legend list!

Thanks again,

Lisa
