Hello QGIS experts

We are looking at using QGIS in our organisation and i'm wondering.. are you using it in a Virtual Environment?

We have tried to go fully virtual but our ESRI Desktop software doesn't work well on the Virtual Environment.  (its meant too, but we couldn't get it working well)
I'm hoping QGIS works better.  Can you tell me if your working QGIS successfully in the virtual environment?

Is there a guide to setting up QGIS on a virtual server?

We have VMware and Microsoft Server 2008.

Now i'm not IT savvy so there are probably a few holes in my description.

Cheers

Jillian

Hi Jillian,

I have no experience using QGIS on a VM, but i know you can download the Osgeo live dvd as a virtual box disk image. That might be a good starting point to see how it goes on a VM?

Yes, Andrew is right, QGIS comes on the OSGeo-Live distribution, which can be installed as a Virtual Machine.
More info at: http://live.osgeo.org

Alternatively, you should be able to download a standard Ubuntu, then install qgis using:
apt-get install qgis

(However OSGeo-Live also comes with sample data and a quickstart).

All the best, Cameron

Hi Jillian,

I know it's been a while and you've probably found a solution for your problem by now, however I thought this might be worthwhile sharing.

While it's not related directly to VMware or MS Server 2008, my IT department have recently set me up a trial of QGIS on an Amazon workspace. I was sceptical at first because I tried the free tier at home and it was horrible, but what they gave me works really well.

The catch is we didn't get good performance until we used the highest spec-ed workspace (you can see prices here), that works out to be $75 per month (per workspace) for a workspace in our region. I'm not sure if that performance issue was related to the specifications themselves or configurations that our IT department made. The other issue which is proving to be a bigger pain than I first thought is the workspace cannot access an of the host devices USB ports etc. This sucks big time if you need to download data from a GPS, or get data from a physical device. Apparently it's in the pipeline to implement, but not there yet.

There is a workspace client for Windows, Mac and Chromebook so you can BYOD. I have a pretty slow internet connection at home but have not experienced any dropouts or funny behaviour when using it. I didn't love it at first but it's growing on me now!

All the best

Andrew

It should work fine on a virtual machine, so long as you give the virtual machine enough resources
