The Conference will be held in Melbourne on November 27/28 with a tour on Nov 29.

A few of the group are working on having a Biogas Stream, so if you have work you want to publicise please send Steve Schuck <sschuckatbigpond.net.au> your title and an outline.

I can only attend on the 27th, so the stream will be worked around that.

See you in Melbourne,
HOOROO

Hi Paul and list

I think Paul is unavailable on 27th.  The conference is on 26 & 27 November, with the technical tour on 28 November.  Please see www.bioenergyaustralia.org for preliminary information.

If you are able to contribute to the biogas component of the program, as Paul indicates, please email me a suggested presentation (and/or poster) title, plus a brief preliminary Abstract.

Regards

Steve

Hi

I'm open to present at this conference... not sure how technical I can get so may need some assistance.  Anyone want to buddy up?

Cheers
Duncan

G'day Duncan (and others),

Welcome to the list and thanks for the breath of life.

I would hope that something basic as a concept could be presented at the Conference so that it is not just a lot of "Academic Experts" (stop shuddering David Halliday) spouting hot air but a genuine sharing of expertise. As I have mainly Academic contacts that is who I put forward, but anyone with "on the ground" experience or ideas to float really has equal (if not greater, to keep the academics from floating away in their own hot air!) right to a hearing. The last couple of Conferences have had a spread of papers, not all very technical.

Happy Digesting,

Thanks Paul,
I'm not sure what stage my project will be at in November but very close (I hope) to the public launch.  The primary focus of the project is around the communication and engagement of biogas science and technology with its various audiences (including the general public) so I would get a big tick from DIISRTE if I do get up and speak/present.
Certainly if the group feels there is value for me to do this I'm happy to start working towards this.  After all, we're in this together :)

G'day Duncan,

A paper about "the communication and engagement of biogas science and technology with its various audiences (including the general public)" would be very appropriate (and a bit different), as I think that is where the group in general are at at the moment - we know pretty well what to do, we just want the opportunities!

Your comment "we're in this together" made me chuckle as one of our students had a T shirt that said "I'm always in the shit - only the depth varies!" and we're talking dog poo!

Happy digesting,

Hi Paul (and others)

Okay... I've drafted something for your consideration.  Thoughts?

Cheers
Duncan

Poo Power!

The communication and engagement of biogas science and technology with the general public

There is over 1350 tonnes of dog waste to be disposed of every day in Australia - nearly half a million tonnes per year. Using this un-tapped resource, Poo Power! plans to engage the general public in its science through utilising an anaerobic digester to process dog waste into biogas that can serve as a local renewable energy source.

This small but important amount of biogas will be used in an urban park in an interactive public installation as a community meeting place for use by dog owners and other citizens.   Funded by Inspiring Australia's 'Unlocking Australia's Potential' program, Poo Power! is a Public Engagement with Science (PES) and Informal Science Education (ISE) project expected to launch in Summer 2012/13.

In this non-technical session, lead by Melbourne’s Duncan Chew, will explain anthrozoology principles as his leverage point to discuss the role of biogas technology in modern society to the general public.

G'day Duncan,

Are you going to be able to say a bit about raising public awareness about biogas - or maybe that is what you meant by "the role of biogas technology"? I don't think you need the "In" at the start of the last paragraph either.

It looks interesting,

I would like to encourage a link to the already significant resource of municipal sewage?

Hi all

Thanks for the comments Paul... it was really "front of mind" stuff.  You guys are the experts so happy to explore points that were raised at last years conference.  So the modified paragraph would be:

This non-technical session lead by Melbourne’s Duncan Chew will explain anthrozoology principles as his leverage point in raising public awareness of biogas in modern society.

Tim, an early conversation with the project (with Yarra Energy Foundation) included sewage 'mining'.  I'm not sure what came of it as someone else to following that lead.  Happy to talk to you to explore this for the session if Steve picks it up for the conference.

Cheers
Duncan

Hi Duncan (copied to Biogas group)

I think this would make an engaging presentation at the conference, within the biogas session(s).  As such, I will run with you presentation title below.  In due course our conference organisers (The Association Specialists, formerly Conference Action) will be in contact for speaker details, and also to get you to upload the final Abstract (assume as discussed on this discussion list.

Thanks and regards

Steve

PS – if any others from the Biogas Group wish to offer presentations and/or posters, please let me know.

Awesome, Steve :)

Looking forward to hearing from the organising committee.

Tim, I did have a chat about the digestion of sewage and it turns out (in Melbourne) it fell into the "too hard basket" - that is, too many barriers and obstacles for the effort in navigating them.  The main issue was down to Melbourne Water (?) who "owns" the sewage and their hesitance to do anything with it other than the status quo.

Cheers
Duncan
