Happy New Year to all

I have a food processing plant that generates waste water made up of water and finely ground mustard meal. The meal contains some mustard vegetable oil.

In the past we have used the water to irrigate paddocks. However, this is no longer an option.

We a dam holding about 1.5 megalitres of this waste water; typical analysis is 55000 mg/l BOD, 120000 mg/L COD & 60000 mg/L Suspended Solids.

We have bugs in the water to beak down the waste by aerobic action. This seems to work OK but we get complaints about odours every few weeks. Most of the time the dam does not smell much but occasionally it gets bad. We do not understand why.

We have installed new water treatment equipment which should enable us to recycle almost all of the waste water.

However, we a still stuck with the dam and perhaps 5,000 litres of waste water per day.

My question is can we cover the dam of 30 M X 30 M, generate bio-gas and use it?

All suggestions gratefully received.

Hi Peter!

I has suggested this option to you last year and you did not get back to me. Guess you might have better luck in this forum.

Cheers

you may need to separate the water and solids a little more, I have seen a few that size at wineries and other small out put locations..

depending on the energy profile of your plant and gas generating capacity of the final product the generation size can vary a lot, you will probably need to do a bit of work on the gas engine side of things to find the best option for generation (think f the engine and the power you want and when.... the run time may be on/off etc.. depending on the gas which then means you need to select and engine suitably so that your maintenance costs are as low as possible to ensure the best NPV [net present value - or life cycle costs if you wish] most likely you will want to run when your mains power is at its highest tariff rate and your demand is highest also....

so basically if you can do it then approach it from a business point of view to maximise the business potential, so your operating profile of energy use, capital costs etc need to be earfully considered.

also remember that you may be able to put more than what your business creates in there... i.e. are there other local outputs of green waste you could take ? council, business etc...And you can boost the generation by heating it with solar energy

If you can get it up larger then you may start making money ... or at least improving your position.. if you can think of something like this then you may want to consider getting a company in to design / build and run the gas and generating plant for you to maximise it and look after it.. letting you get on with what you do best ! (thats what we do...)

and don't forget thee may be government grants available for you too !

good luck !
Kind Regards

Roger,

Thanks for your reply. The purpose of the plant is to control the odour. It may be that we will merely burn the gas if it is not economic to use it.

Regards

Peter
