ROCK CLIMBING 1st April 2007 - Fatality. Lowering accident and head
injury, Mount York, NSW
UPDATED REPORT
A 36 year old female climber from NSW was being lowered to the ground
after a top-rope ascent of "The Obituary" a grade 14 climb at Mount
York in the Blue Mountains. During the lower she fell approx 8m and
hit the back of her head and lost consciousness. She was wearing a
helmet but sustained a serious injury where the helmet had pushed up.
She was climbing with a group of friends.
The belayer (who was doing the lowering) was positioned at the top of
the climb near the belay ring-bolts. The belayer/lowerer was using a
self-braking belay device.
Ambulance and police attended the scene and the patient was stabilised
and evacuated by helicopter. Unfortunately the woman did not recover
from her injuries and passed away in hospital a number of days after
the accident.
This accident will now be the subject of a coronial inquiry so we are
unable to make more comment on the likely cause of the accident for
now.
