A man was inspecting a route whilst climbing unroped about 3-4 metres
above the ground. As he was stepping down from a ledge, a handhold
broke, and as he fell his right toes struck another ledge forcing them
back to his shin.
He landed on his back amongst rocks, but sustained no back injuries.
He did however break both the tibia and fibula just above the ankle.
His friends administered first aid by splinting and bandaging the
foot. They all walked out taking 2 ½ hours, followed by another 1½
hours to the hospital.
The climber was operated on late on the Sunday night. A plate and 4
screws were inserted. He is now recovering.
