Analysis of Month and Date Maximum Temperature recorded at Canberra Meteorological Station exceeded 40 degrees C

As promised, I have been through the records for the Canberra Airport Met Station to gauge the occurrences of Heatwave (>40 degree days) from 1940 to 2026 (Today's date).

As Blair commented earlier, 40 degree days in Canberra did not occur until the last few decades and frequency has also increased. Note the gap in recent years, courtesy of La Nina and a wetter period. This January has seen a return of extreme heat despite the current weak La Nina, although we here in Canberra are in a drought, evidenced by the deciduous street trees turning autumn colors and shedding leaves. Even the local eucalypts are dying, no doubt stressed by lack of water and extreme temperatures.
