OK..I'm a bit too much on the cemetery side for a PhD...but the fems have degrees for all sorts of silly things far more trivial than the weather..

There's a number of interesting things if you enter both terms into Google Trends or Insights:
http://www.google.com.au/trends?q=weather&ctab=0&geo=au&geor=all&date=all&sort=1
There's a long term increase in 'weather' searches and a long term decrease in the "other term". There's also strong peaks for 'weather' every summer just about everywhere in Oz (might suggest people are interested in heatwaves as well, not just thunderstorms)... similar to the UK, whereas in the US, it's very steady. Can also enter in the Bureau's site URL and see traffic trends there. So you're right - the study of all these connections could make for an entire PhD thesis!
P.S. apologies for any political incorrectness re this :)

Good grief! Imagine the next headline: 'Downburst breaks weather man's marriage' (mini tornado?)
Seriously, one could get a PhD researching the connection..

For anyone who hasn't read this news article on the popularity of the bureau's website yet, I found it amusing (but not surprising):
