Hi all,
We are being blasted by very strong, squally Southerly winds as the "bomb" East Coast Low off Sydney intensifies as it moves southwards along the Coast. A strong high-pressure system near Tasmania is tightening the air pressure gradient between the two systems causing the gale-force winds on the Coast. Here at Gilmore, the wind is funneled northwards between the Brindabella Ranges to our west and the Tralee Hills to our east. We are also up on the Soutwest side of Gilmore Hill and exposed to winds from the south!
We are currently expecting average winds of 45km/hr., gusting to 65 km/hr.
A check of the BOM web site shows maximum gusts over 100km/hr. at Penrith (102 @ 1627); Wattamolla (113 @ 11.49); Jervis Bay Airfield (100 @ 1936); Point Perpendicular (102 @ 1933); Montague Island (122 @2140) and Ulladulla  (104@1951).
The central Pressure has fallen to 988 Hpa, a reading I have not seen for such a system in years.
Looks like an interesting few days on the coast! I still can't understand why people have built houses on the sand dunes! Now they are complaining that the authorities have not helped them! Of course, local councils with an eye to big rates and property developers with an eye to huge profits are to blame!

Cheers,

Gavin
