Hi Don.

I set my station up in May 2001 and the highest temp I had up until today was 44.9 on Jan 11, 2010.

Today smashed that. At 4.08pm this afternoon I recorded 45.6, with the Temp now dropped back to about 40 with the wind changing from North to South at present.

The outside temp when I was driving my School bus, on dash display said 46.9 at 4pm.

Very uncomfortable day.

Regards Bussy

Highest in recent decades at the Research Station AWS was 46.2 on 31 January 2020 (today was 45.6). Record is 46.8 in January 1939.

Here's a map for the spatially-minded, summarising some of what's happened to date.

At a state-wide scale, and provisionally, Victoria (Mallee) surpassed its previous warmest temperature on record on Tuesday while NSW (Upper Western) equalled its second warmest on record on Wednesday, with temperatures not seen since January 1939.

Some medium-term records are also falling at alpine stations, both for overnight minimums and daytime maximums.

Of the long-term sites I track, there have been all-time records at Ceduna, Mildura, Dubbo (equal), Tibooburra and Bathurst (Cabramurra missing by 0.1), and January records at Nhill and Laverton.

Hi Blair.

Thanks for that. I am missing a little bit of data around that time as I had a problem with my station and was waiting for the new one to arrive if I recall.

Hi all,
The Tuggeranong AWS smashed its record today (43,.5 degrees @ 3.49pm), although the period of observation is a bit short compared to Canberra Airport which recorded 42.6 degrees @ 3.41pm.
Here at Gilmore North, we broke our January record with 44.6 degrees @3.10pm. Previous record was 44.5 degrees on 5th January 2019.That is the maximum from the Davis Vantage Pro 2 PWS Recorder .I will check the other instruments in my screen in the morning to verify the record.
Goulburn Airport 39.2 @3.40pm, Cooma Airport 38.4 @ 2.07pm.
A strong squally Southerly blew in around 5.19 this evening with isolated showers in the area and a maximum gust of 51 km/hr. Still 24.5 degrees as I type (11.10pm)
Very hazy over the past few days with the smoke increasing tonight with the southerly.
Cheers,
Having a problem with scanning the Temperature/Dew Point graph so hope it comes through.

Finally cracked a 50 yesterday after many near-misses!

Andamooka has come in with spot on 50.0C  😊

Another chance today with a few places expecting 48-49C.

Climate Data Online on the Bureau website normally updates reasonably quickly (faster than Daily Weather Observations, which usually updates around 11am local time).

Not the greatest of sites, but the gravel surface is at least representative of "natural vegetation" in the region. The construction equipment doesn't look like it's a permanent feature 😊.

I wasn't surprised to see this given the Roxby Downs report.

Hi Tim,

Where did you find a value that wasn't rounded at this time of day?

I anticipate that Andamooka is not on the list of stations that Blair pays particular attention to. 👀

I remember back in the late 80s Maree’s parents, who lived at Robinvale at the time, visited us for Christmas – we lived in Melbourne at the time. They left for home one day in early January I think it was. That evening in the Melbourne Herald there was a headline saying that Mildura’s maximum temp that day had reached 47 degrees. Robinvale is 80kms south east of Mildura so the temp would have been similar there.

Hi Chris,

That is correct. A whole range of stations in South Australia, Northwest Victoria and inland NSW and South West Queensland broke records, some going back to 1939 ones. Extraordinary event.

An interesting fact for climate deniers ....
Since Canberra officially started temps in 1940
In the  first 65 years  to 2005, there were only 4  days of 40 degrees or more
In the 20 years since 2006, today will be  the 24th such day even though last Wednesday was the 1st such day for 6 years

I grew up in Canberra, and the first 40+ day I experienced there was when I was there for a conference in 2017. (There were no 40+ days between 1973 and 1998).

In a similar vein, the average number of days per year when it reaches 45 somewhere in Victoria was about 0.3 from 1957-2000 (there was only one between 1983 and 2001) to over 2 since 2001. (1957's taken as the start date here since that's when the network in northwest Victoria reached roughly its current density).

Hi all,
Another 40 + degree day here at Gilmore North with a maximum temperature recorded by the Davis Vantage 2 PWS at 41.4 degrees at 4.10 pm. I am looking at the Canberra Airport records at present and will table a list of 40+ Maximums later tonight.
Cheers
