2009 was a remarkable year that I'll never forget, not just because of the Black Saturday fires earlier that year, but also because of the sudden transition to far above average temps across a big swath of Australia in August. It was like a switch being flicked.
I have a vague recollection of seeing sea surface temperature patterns reminiscent of a Modoki El-Nino at the time, but my memory on that is vague.
On the same day that Yamba got that max of 36.1C in August, Brisbane got to a staggering 35.4C which was 12C above that site's average max temp for August and smashing its previous record.
Then came the huge eastern Australia dust storms the following month which blanketed countless places such as Sydney, Canberra, and Brisbane, before the remnants got carried further north and towards New Zealand.
