I note that on 13 August 1946, Yamba had a top temp of 36.1 degrees
which was their  hottest day of that year.

Is Yamba the only place in Australia south of the tropics to have their
hottest day of the year in winter ?   Does anyone know ?

Even Darwin  had their hottest annual day only once in winter on 30
August 1971

Yamba also did this in August 2009 (also 36.1).

Most likely candidates would be subtropical sites on the east coast. I thought Evans Head (37.6) and Ballina might be likely prospects from the 2009 event but both got higher in November 2009.

2009 was a remarkable year that I'll never forget, not just because of the Black Saturday fires earlier that year, but also because of the sudden transition to far above average temps across a big swath of Australia in August. It was like a switch being flicked. I have a vague recollection of seeing sea surface temperature patterns reminiscent of a Modoki El-Nino at the time, but my memory on that is vague.

On the same day that Yamba got that max of 36.1C in August, Brisbane got to a staggering 35.4C which was 12C above that site's average max temp for August and smashing its previous record.

Then came the huge eastern Australia dust storms the following month which blanketed countless places such as Sydney, Canberra, and Brisbane, before the remnants got carried further north and towards New Zealand.
