Sydney’s average maximum temp  for winter  was 18.2   - the coldest winter in Sydney for 15 years since 2010 when it was 17.7 degrees.

Sydney’s average maximum temp  for August   was 18.2   - the coldest August in Sydney for 17 years since 2008 when it was 17.3

However, the average  August max temp is 18.0  so despite being  the coldest for 17 years it was it was still above the long term average.

Nationally, it was the second coldest winter (for mean temperature) of the last decade, but still about 0.5 degrees above the 1961-1990 average. Almost everywhere in Australia had above-average maximum temperatures (although mostly by modest margins; the only substantial areas more than 1 degree above average were in the northern tropics, WA and southern Tasmania). Minimum temperatures were below average in a lot of the inland tropics, particularly western Queensland, and were also slightly below average in a lot of Victoria and inland NSW.

On a local scale Trentham Victoria  (backyard weather)…August was a record cold month for minimums…with a record 17 air frosts, records back to 1983. If we have one more frost in September that will beat the all time number of yearly frosts (from 1983)…our average minimum for August was 0.2c….the winter period around the Trentham region was wetter than normal June 145mm…July 172mm and August 143mm….the other record of note was a minus 7.1 in May that was a significant record ..there were many frozen water pipes and damage to sensitive plants…

That's interesting - Castlemaine, the nearest Bureau site, was below average but not exceptionally so (mean min 3.0, 0.7 below average, lowest since 2019, 1.6 above the 1994 record). I guess your site is probably colder than some of the earlier Trentham sites?

Yes we are in a frost hollow..however the May -7c was correlated with 6 other private stations…that varied between -6 and -7.2. The weather stations are Davis from our experience they are reasonably accurate …Jane has a list of weather station all around then Trentham region ….there are several interesting frost hollows in the Trentham area including one nearby the cemetery !…where the ground can be frozen all day !.despite the August frost we are below normal for snow days with two snowfall days and two sleet days…the average snow days are four…1983 to present.

Definitely not questioning your readings, just aware that past Trentham observations may have been in warmer places.

Melbourne itself had its lowest August mean minimum since 1994, and a few sites in the Melbourne/Geelong area set records (mostly sites that weren't open in 1994, although also a couple of longer-term ones at Melbourne Airport and Scoresby).
